Is that you Geoff? I think so but you've changed your id so many times I've lost track. :D

I haven't actually gone through all the steps yet (just gathered quotes for a similar shipping experience), but here's my advice from what I've learned so far:

1) Depending on how heavy the machine is, the shipping company may charge you based on weight or (if it's bigger than a certain LxWxH) by "volume weight". I don't think there's a standard formula for calculating "volume weight", but here's an example. Each shipping company probably has their own maximum volume:weight ratio and their own "volume weight" calculation.

3) Insurance can be difficult with large items... At least one company refused to insure a tape machine unless it's in a road case.

3) I've seen people recommend van shipping companies like Allied or North American, but good luck dealing with them for shipping a tape machine. They'll send you off to their obscure "special products" division, run by ex-KGB agents, and you'll be lucky if you even get to talk to someone's voice mail. They'll take all kinds of details down but answer no questions and never bother calling you back.

4) Companies that I've seen recommended elsewhere and my personal comments on them (YMMV):
  • Forward Air: I didn't get very far with these guys because they don't ship to BC, period.
  • Rock-It Cargo: Very helpful, these guys are worth going with because they can tell you exactly what you need, and also the questions you need to ask other shipping companies. They're not cheap, but their service so far has been impeccable.
  • TNT Freight: Helpful and decent prices.
  • USF Holland: very nice folks, decent prices, but their phone reps don't seem to be the most knowledgeable...
$0.02! Good luck!

Johann

thanks Johann!

I think I'm going to use FedEx if Bill would be willing to pack it well to my spec..

the machine and package wouldn't be over 75lbs (overestimated figure)..and if the package if kept to 30" cubed it falls into a "regular" shipment and shouldn't cost more than $150 for a 5 day service and insurance..

Ah, smaller than I thought. Consider yourself lucky! :D

Good luck! Assuming you seal the deal I'd love to hear what you think of the machine. I know Aurelialuz loves 'em.

OK Bill you can have your thread back now... :D

Thanks, but I didn't feel like it had been taken over. Of the gear that I have and the gear that I am selling this is one of the peices that I wish I could keep. Oh well, Christmas in summer is going to have to do.

well, vintageking sells them for 499 a piece, and I bet if you look around you can find them new for less than that even.

If you do find them for less than 998 a pr let me know. I looked for weeks when I got these. Literally. And when I say low hours I mean like twelve. Great monitors, too.
