Ampex MM1100 8-track at Michigan State Surplus

Post by crookedsound » Fri Feb 27, 2009 8:39 am

In case someone is looking for this type of thing.
Saw it today when I was there.

http://www.msusurplusstore.com/servlet/Detail?no=2454

I got a Yamaha PM 1000 24 track board there a couple weeks ago for $500. Sometimes you get good deals here because many people aren't aware the surplus even exists.

One important thing...they don't ship.

Whoh,

I wonder why the model number is MM1100? I would have expected it to have the line amps all individualized like on a 440. The MM1100 16 tracks were like the size of an elephant. This looks more like an 8 track MM1200. In any regard, it looks super awesome. I'd probably trade my 440-8 for it because this would take up less space and probably has a better transport.

Cool.

That is awesome. Some detroit garage rock TapeOp'er better snag that thing...
Check out my website for cool songs recorded and played by me with Steve Goulding of the Mekons on drums. Drums were recorded by our own Joel H at Studio G.

It is indeed an MM-1100. An early one (mechanical timer).

It's pretty good size. I would estimate that it is about the size of a refrigerator cut in half vertically.

So it'd probably fit in the back of a Volvo station wagon, right?

I'm only like 13 hours away round trip...

Hmmm...

Yeah, I was there again today, and it is probably a bit smaller than half a fridge.

If I have a chance to go there on Friday, I'll take a tape measure and get the dimensions.

You could also contact them and ask them to measure if you like. They are there from 1-3pm Wed & Thurs. The people there are pretty great and would probably do that no problem.

No, I don't know anything about it. I am just a lurker at the surplus store. Sorry.
The pictures they have on the site are current, and of the actual machine where it is now in the store. So, if that helps at all.
It says it came out of active service, so that should indicate that it had to be working to some extent I would imagine.

Is there anything I can look at/for if I am able to get there on Friday? I'll do my best.

Hey thanks! Not really necessary for you to go through that work to check it out... I'm only an hour or so away... Going to try and make it there early next week to snoop a bit. Thanks for the offer!!

Not to ride on this thread but I was watching this machine a bit too, but probably too much of a drive for me for it.
On the other hand if someone is looking for an MM1200 24 track, I have a pretty strong lead on one that would be a good project, and priced accordingly.
