You should mention that the eq section on the TNC81's is un-usable because it oscillates. I know everyone already knows this, but you should still say it. The eq is fixable with some modifications described on www.groupdiy.com. And the preamp is good sounding, and doesn't need anything done to it. A really good value for the money.

hey honky,

i am all about being open and honest. and i don't think you should say something is "un-useable" if you've never heard it. so, i would like you to tell me what you think. here are clips of both acmp81's

http://www.sendspace.com/file/e34vkd
http://www.sendspace.com/file/lgbvsw

i did this test with the acm-3 ribbon mic, and a relatively noisey apt.

i hear a little hum when engaging the low end EQ, but everything i hear is beyond use-able. and the weirdest part is that the first unit doesn't have the 7th gain stage pop. i thought that was a design flaw. super weird.

Hey man, well, I suppose it's possible they got some of them right then. Mine (TNC81') had all the problems w/ the eq that so many folks have talked about, and I've seen the schematic that they built them from and it was an over-sight in the design (a couple wrong transistors) which is a pretty easy fix.

Anyway, good luck. They are cool sounding preamps for sure.

gotta give credit where credit is due:

I just wanted to post to say that I purchased the API Lunchbox from Will (against88)
and I gotta say it was seamless...the unit was in great shape as promised, and was packed/shipped to ensure it's safe arrival.

I wouldn't hesitate to purchase from him again.
