anyone ever see a craigslist scam like this?

anyone ever see a craigslist scam like this?

Post by Harry » Mon Sep 21, 2009 9:40 am

I got an offer for this upright I've been trying to sell but it sure does smell like a scam.

I've never had anyone try to scam something from me while I was on the selling end....but I'm sure it happens.

Here's the reply (the 2nd reply)

Hello,

I appreciate your response to my inquiry. Am interested in buying
your item. I would have loved to come, check it out myself but
I just got married and am presently on honeymoon to Hawaii with my husband.
I would love some surprise inclusions and replacements in my husband's studio
on our return.

Please do withdraw the advert from craigslist as I wouldn't mind
adding $50 for you to take it down, so that I can be assured that the item
is held for me. I should believe it is in good condition as stated in the ad.
I will be making the payment via a Certified Check, which my secretary will
mail across to you.

I'll be picking the item from you with the aid of a mover. My Mover
will be coming to pick it from you once the Certified Check has been
cashed. Please I will need both your full name and physical address
along with your phone number to issue out the payment.

Regards,
Tracey

NOW I guess it could be legit????

If I get a check and I am 100% sure it has cleared I'll give the bass to whoever( it's been for sale forever:)

Anyone see how I could get burned by this if I have the bank sign off on the fact that the check has cleared?
(other than my whole family being killed by the craigslist killer part II ?)

no shit..... I can almost hear the nigerian accent:)

I wonder how it works though?

at some point a check has to clear or not? there would be no bass until then.

It would almost be worth it to run a sting or something???

It is a verified and circulating Craigslist scam. Here is a link that explains how it works... the wording of the scam shown in this link is IDENTICAL to yours (right down to the check from the secretary):

http://ivebeenmugged.typepad.com/my_web ... -scam.html

The way it works is that the certified check is a forgery, but it takes a long time before that becomes known. From About Scams:
"A distant person offers a genuine-looking (but fake) cashier's check... value of cashier's check often exceeds your item - scammer offers to "trust" you... banks will often cash these fake checks AND THEN HOLD YOU RESPONSIBLE WHEN THE CHECK FAILS TO CLEAR, including criminal prosecution in some cases!"
Run far away.

I'd be very surprised if you bank will do that for you. There will be loopholes and they'll leave themselves wiggle room...like a 60 day window during which they can determine the veracity of the check.

"Certified checks" being an instrument that's particularly slow to trace. If you do get one, do some research into the bank that issued it...look up their phone number and call to see if the check is real (but look it up, don't just call the number that the scammers printed on their check  ).

The above link explains all.

This happens to me a lot, the first time I kind of went along with it for awhile, several e-mails back and forth. The gist was that they were mailing me a check, but "oops" it was too big. It was like a $2400 check for an $800 bass guitar cabinet. They wanted me to write a check in return to their courier service that they would be sending to my house. Plus I could keep an extra 200 or something for my trouble.

That immediately raised the red flag, and I refused the sale. Later found out this stuff happens allllllll the time.

Don't do it for any reason.

Cash and local pickup only for all craigslist sales. Period. No ifs, ands, or buts.
