SOLD! Soundtracs Topaz 32 Channel - $700 OBO

Post by b3groover » Wed Sep 22, 2010 10:59 am

I have the classic "Miami Vice" color scheme Soundtracs Topaz 32 channel mixing console for sale. It does not have the meter bridge. The power supply was rebuilt by Steve M down in Florida (the US expert on all things Soundtrac). It's very clean, quiet, and sounds great. I used it on my last four CD releases. It's a fantastic board and I love the EQ section especially, but I'm moving into a digital mixing setup.

Located in Lansing, MI. I'd prefer not to ship but I will if you cover all the costs.

Bumpus. Make an offer. Need to unload it. It also has better op-amp chips in the last two channels (can't remember what I put in there... I think they are THAT chips). I'll throw in some Hosa 8-channel snakes so you can use the direct outs.

I looked up costs for shipping this across the country and it would be around $150 (less if you're not on the West Coast). Even with that, it's a good deal!

$700 OBO. Need to move it. Make an offer.

how do you feel about the pre's on it? And if there's no meter bridge, is there at least a L/R LED meter or vu?

The preamps are good. They are based around the Analog Devices SSM2017 chip, which was a good chip in it's day. You can upgrade the chips; there are a few pin for pin compatible chips out there including the Analog Devices SSM2019, the Burr Brown (Texas Instruments) INA217 and the THAT 1512. In fact, I put THAT 1512 chips into the last two channels on mine (channels 31 & 32) just as an experiment. I didn't notice much of a change in terms of the tone of preamp, but the noise floor was much improved.

It's kind of a pain since there are no sockets for the chips; you have to de-solder the old ones and then install the new ones. I put sockets in for the two channels I did. I seem to remember something about the 1512 chips drawing a bit more current, too which would mean you could only do maybe 16 channels with the stock power supply... but I could be wrong. I haven't thought about any of this in years. :)

Here's a datasheet on the 1512 which talks about the replacement, btw:

http://www.thatcorp.com/datashts/dn138.pdf

As for metering, you can see in the pictures it has LED meters for the main outs and all the subs. If you press the SOLO button on any channel, you can see the level on the main outs.

Mine has two small cosmetic issues I forgot about; one is that the gain knob on the third channel is slightly bent. It does not effect the functionality, it's purely cosmetic.

Also, I'm missing about 18 of the plastic nuts that go on the 1/4" jacks on the back. I ordered all the remaining stock of those nuts (long since discontinued) from Steve M, the authorized US Soundtracs repair guy in Florida because I used to missing a lot more. Unfortunately he didn't have enough for all the missing ones. He might have some more now. Again, this is purely cosmetic. The jacks still function fine and are solid; they just look funny. When Soundtracs re-named and re-color schemed the Topaz (and put the "Project" suffix on it), they used a different kind of 1/4" jack without those silly nuts.

It's just taking up space now, so I'm willing to deal.

Here are some hi-res pics:
