To the best of my knowledge, Otari never made an MX5050 series 1" 8 track. The MX5050 series had 8 tracks on 1/2" tape. I have one of those and it is an excellent machine, BTW. The MX-7300, MX-7803 and MX-70 did come in 1" 8 track versions, and I think 1" 8-track headstacks were an option for MX-80 and MTR-90 models, too.

A friend I haven't talked to for a number of years used to own an MX-7803 that he kept in great shape. I'd like to chat with him anyway, so this is a convenient excuse to track him down. If I can locate him, and he still has it, I'll let you know.

Cheers,

Here's an Ampex 1" 8T near you:

FYI, the Otari MX-5050 series only went to half inch 8 track, not one inch. The Ampex is in a completely different league (it's also about 350 lbs heavier).

David

Full disclosure: I sourced and rebuilt this machine for them. They did one album on it and are selling it for personal reasons.

I found the guy and we had a great chat and he still has the machine and he's even moved out to your area, but he has no interest in selling it. I got the numbers wrong, BTW, the first series was the MX-7308 and the second machine was the MX-7800.

I have an MX7800 Otari 1" 8 track. Totally rebuilt. Heads have about 75 percent life left with a custom made brass headstack. Located in the Chicago area. Interested?

Rick

Did you find an 8T 1" machine in the end?
