WTB: Alignment/Test Reel for Teac 80-8

The manual calls for YTT-1144 or MRL31J129, but I wasn't sure if other models will get the job done...

Well, an excellent starting point is the MRL web site. Here's one particularly useful link:

Your machine is 15ips IEC equalization. The 31J119 tape recommended in the manual is 200nWb/m, which was fine for Ampex 406 tapes. If you are using a more modern tape like Quantegy (Ampex) 456, then I would go for the 31J219, which is the same tones but 3dB higher, which 456 can easily take.

However, these list at $225, and you can save a lot of money by getting one of their shorter tapes. Either the 2 frequency, 3 frequency, or my favorite from the one speed tapes, the 4 frequency. These are all listed at $145 if you go for the 4 minutes version, which is catalog number 341-673-482-103 for the 250nWb/m version.

But do read the papers on the MRL web site and see for yourself.
