How does 3M 996 compare to the new ATR tape or Quantegy 499 in terms of Bias, noise etc ?

When 3M went out of the tape business, they sold the formulation for 996 to Ampex, who tweaked the formula a little and called it GP9. GP9, 499, 996 are all +9 tapes and close in bias. Some believe that 996 is more immune from sticky-shed syndrome than a similar Ampex vintage. 996's backing is not as thick as Quantegy or RMG and is a little easier for the transport to pull.

Used tape can work fine as long as it wasn't abused (oxide shedding, stretched, etc). My stock comes from production/jingle houses and is gently used.

ATR is great tape... but very costly new.
