The search engine blows
Moderators: TapeOpLarry, tomb
Code: Select all
<form id="googlesearch" method="get" name="f" action="http://www.google.com/search">
<fieldset>
<legend>Search the Messageboard with Google</legend>
<input type="hidden" name="sitesearch" value="messageboard.tapeop.com" />
<input type="text" id="googlesearchinput" name="q" size="31" maxlength="255" value=" " />
<input type="submit" class="submit" id="googlesearchsubmit" value="Search" />
</fieldset>
</form>
I'd just stick it in search.php but maybe more people would utfsf if it were in the header...

So should we seriously replace the search with this? I'm all for it.
While we're at it, we could disable the stupid phpbb indexing. You wouldn't believe how it works. It takes every single word in each post (minus those on a stoplist) and puts them all in a table called "words", which it queries every time you do a search. I'm sure this slows down posting considerably.

tomb rss
ryan sez, yeah, we can do rss...
however it's not on our list of top priorities at the moment and we're only 2 people making the board happen, really...
we seem to have conquered the spamming problem (!) and as soon as we can be sure the board stays up - having issues with our host's dns server not responding properly - for a consecutive week or something stupid, we can tackle the rss thing...

Good for you. However, as was mentioned here, two-letter words are ignored, so some time if you need to search for "xy", "3d", "ab", etc, you'll feel the pinch.crow wrote:i've never had any trouble finding out what i needed with the search function.
Also, no capability to seach for phrases can slow things down.
The downside with Google is that you have to wait for their search engine to index the pages, rather than having all content immediately available with a local search. That takes Google, what, a week on average?
