TOMB Search Upgrades
Please, Please Tomb....
All I want to be able to do is narrow my search to the subject field...
Is it possible?
Can it be made possible?
It really decimates my ability to search, and to use the term "UFSF".
Seriously though, without a decent search function, all of the great advice and communal brainstorming of the past gets lost in the void. Without being able to easily access pertinent information at will, what's the point of it all?

About a year ago somebody posted a Google-based TOMB search for use as an item in the Firefox pull-down search engine box.
Ironically, I can't find the post (which was made here at TOMB) explaining how to set it up. Anyway, I have it installed on my Firefox and it works much better than the resident search engine here.
Somebody can chime in and explain how to rig it up again?

In Google if you click on "advanced search" one of the options is to search in a specific domain.
Alternately, in Google, type what you're looking for and add: site:http://messageboard.tapeop.com
I don't know how well it works though. I've never tried it.

That method works in a pinch. At least then you can use quotes and such. The results aren't always complete though. You'd have to ask Larry Page why the crawler ignores certain things.RoyMatthews wrote:In Google if you click on "advanced search" one of the options is to search in a specific domain.

I made that search plugin. Don't know where it is right now and would rather keep it that way cause I don't really wanna deal with anyone's bugs.
If you use Firefox (and you should), there's a really easy way to search the board, no plugin required. takes a tiny bit of setup.
1. Go to "Bookmarks>Organize Bookmarks"
2. Click "New Bookmark"
3. Name it "TOMB Search" or whatever you like
4. In Location, paste this line:
http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=%s ... tapeop.com
5. In Keyword, type "t" (without quotes)
6. You can ignore description
7. Click OK
Now, in the location bar (where you normally type in myfaveporn.com and stuff), type this:
"t cheap mic pre"
and you should get google results, specifically for the tomb.
"t" is calling up your bookmark and the text after is getting inserted into that search query you pasted in. You can do this for any old site. just replace the messageboard.tapeop.com part in the save and use a different keyword. You can also use any keyword you like.
Hope it works.

for the original question... I couldn't figure out a way to get it into the search bookmark but if you prefix "allintitle:" to your search on google, it will only search page titles. Since each thread subject is part of the page title, it effectively limits the search to subjects.
so in the google search box:
will only return results for "mic pre" in the subject field.
It'd be nice if the phpbb search page here was just removed and replaced with a simple google based search page. it's not Hillary or Ryan's doing - phpbb search just sucks dirty ass.
so in the google search box:
Code: Select all
allintitle: mic pre site:messageboard.tapeop.com

I know that the search could be better here...
but, I get pretty decent results when I'm searching for things... it's not as horrible as some people make it out. I think that for a lot of people who write off the search function here, they'd get better results if they figured out to check the "search for all terms" box before doing a multiple word search.
I know that doesn't apply to this thread.... but, it is something that could be confusing for some users.

That's definitely worth mentioning. It confused me at first too.subatomic pieces wrote: I think that for a lot of people who write off the search function here, they'd get better results if they figured out to check the "search for all terms" box before doing a multiple word search.

I still think the S.F. kinda sucks though!
Thanks for the pointers syrupcore. I'll give it a shot sometime.
for subject only search, replace the above url with this one:
http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=al ... tapeop.com
