When I click on a link...

Post by winky dinglehoffer » Thu Mar 26, 2020 7:49 am

This is fairly trivial, but it's mildly annoying. When I click on a link in someone's post, I exit TOMB and go to that link. I would be much happier if the link opened up in a new tab. I could certainly do this by right clcking and selecting "Open Link in New Tab," but I have to think when I do that.

Isn’t this a behavior preference you can set in your web browser?

On a Mac, hold Command and then click to open in a new tab.

I remember doing this a long time ago (doing my own websites), but when writing HTML you have to specifically set an attribute in the link when you create it (and not something we have full control of here on TOMB). inside the "anchor" for the link - <a> and </a> - you have to add target="_blank" and that tells the browser to open it in a new tab

Code: Select all

<a href="https://google.com" target="_blank"> this is a test link</a>
but we don't get to write the HTML here (only tags that are not actual HTML) so it would be something that would have to be set in the defaults of the board - and not even sure if the board software (phpBB) has a setting like that?

EDIT: found there are some phpBB extensions which can do this, but not sure if the admins want to update?

Right-click the link in Windows, choose "open link in new tab" is what I do.

Maybe your browser has a preference for opening links on a new tab or window.

Does not appear to be an option within Firefox. I know there are other sites I go to where a clicked link will open in a new tab, and I'm not sure why any web designer or website owner in the 2020s would consider it a positive to have someone leave their site when a link is clicked. TOMB does have ads, and one would think that keeping people on pages where those ads are would be a desirable thing for the fine folks of TapeOp. If someone clicks on a link and leaves the site completely, they're far less likely to continue browsing TOMB than if the link opened in a tab.

Also, if you're using the effing search function and click out while digging through ancient threads, sometimes it's hard to get back to where you were.

Fixing or not fixing this issue is unlikely to trigger a cataclysmic disaster or bring about world peace. Nonetheless, it'd be nice if a clicked link opened in a new browser tab.
