3" reel...yes 3"
ok, so i found this tape recorder in my grandmothers house (great find) its a sony tc-907 or somthing. it takes 3" reels and i have no idea where i could get some. if anyone has any idea on where or even how i could make some (the spool) i would really like that - thanks - andrew@collberg.com

its just one track. i think its kinda like an interveiw recorder. its from like 1970 i think. anyone know where to get the spools?

A one track 3" machine!!! Im sorry, but I can't believe it. I think you are measuring something wrong here... The track width on a 2" 16 track is big, and Ive seen a 1" 2-track which is really over-the-top in terms of track width (1/2"/per track), imo. But one 3" track! Maybe I haven't done enough research, but I don't think there is such thing as 3" tape in the first place...
Wait, I think I know what you may have found... it might be an old reel to reel video-tape recorder. Im not sure about all of the formats that were used on those, but we have some 2" video tapes laying around here in the archives where I work.

Three inch reels, not tape.

I've got one of these. Most of them are mono on 1/4" tape, one track per side. There might be some stereo units by the mid-70s, but I think at that point cassettes dominated for portable stuff. I think mine's a Panasonic. I'll look in my basement tonight and try to find the thing and spare reels.

you might want to call LSC in burbank and see if they have something like that laying around. they might.
