Fader length does not have an impact on the sound - I personally don't like the long faders on 512/20 because the Alps faders used aren't "silky" smooth faders like a P&G Fader and it's kind of hard to get a consistent fade. The shorter faders on the m50 are easier to manage.
Don't get me wrong, though...I love long, high quality, faders. And, you could always buy a 512/20 and spend the ~$1200 to replace the faders with P&Gs if the tascam was cheap-to-free (No sarcasm intended). You'd have a pretty kick-butt work surface.
