Moving to Portland, OR

Post by haydenb » Mon Dec 06, 2004 3:30 pm

I'm a big tape op fan, and I check out these boards all the time. I'm moving to Portland in the beginning of January and I'll be looking for work, friends, and collaborators.

I work at Line 6 now as a software test engineer. I have an electrical engineering degree. I play drums, guitar, and sing. I write and record. I'm a computer tech for both PC and Mac. I tutor math and science. And I'm also a magician.

So if your computer crashes while you're printing invitations for your kid's 6th birthday party, and you need somone to fix the computer, entertain, and then write a song about the whole event, I'm your guy.

Well, I'm going to try to be a songwriter/performer. I've always had a conflict between science and art I guess, and I'd really like to just wholeheartedly work on being a musician. That's the only way I think I can reach and maybe surpass my potential.

I'm going to Portland to do this because I really like the town. It reminds me of Boston, where I went to school, but without reminding me of school. The cost of living is lower. I just rented a house which I never could have done in Los Angeles. The music community feels more supportive in Portland. In LA, everyone's doing their own thing. It's very cut throat. There's not a lot of support for the independant artist.

My girlfriend has some family up there so there will be plenty of places to have dinner, lunch, and maybe breakfast.

Well, welcome to town! Portland is a GREAT city for many reasons, but I wouldn't exactly call the music scene "supportive". It's actually fairly clickish, but, within those clicks, pretty cool. But, it's a great recording town and fabulou on many other fronts: scenery, quality of life, etc. So, you'll love it!

Fuck all those selfish bastards. You can be anything you want in Portland. We voted 72% for Kerry, too! Motherfuckers, why don't we secede?

Just remember to go see Hank at Denny's Old Town Music and you'll do just fine...
