My first living room recording

Post by dougo » Mon Aug 09, 2004 8:00 am

This is the first recording we did in our living room. Our bass players mom had a birthday coming up so we had one day to get it down and recorded. We had all the usual tapeop moments. A stoned roomate coming out of his room after bonging it up for about 3 hours. He proceeded to sit right next to my amp which allowed him to add his own special vocal stylings. This made for some fine editing! Our fine pothead brought his dog out along with him who also decided to add backing vocals. Normally I leave the dog in but I just couldn't autotune him that day so edit out he went.

Please give a listen and tell me what you think, writing, recording, mixing, whatever you critique will be greatly appreciated.

Sorry for the bump.
I guess you have to go to where it says music on the page. There is only 1 song listed. No special players or registration needed.

Thanks again,

Yeah, kinda obvious on the songwriting style. What the hell, his mom liked it. I thought the song was definitely derivative myself but it's still fun to record. What I was curious about was did I pull any major blunders on the recording or mix?

Setup:
Drums- Radio Shack PZM on isolation pad 1' in front of the kick and Oktava 219 over the drummers right shoulder pointing towards the snare.

Guitar- SM57 close mic'd. Second and third guitar was thru a Adrennalin II due to roomate constraints(drunk-hippy)

Bass- Oktava 319 about 1' off the grill.

Vocal- Oktava 319

I don't have any outboard gear yet. Just used a couple of plugins in Logic.

Thanks for the comment, it made me cringe this morning but I still busted up laughing!

Cheers,

Galaxie 500, hmm 80's band correct? This would explain everything. Our bass player who coined this song for mom is a huge 80's fan.

Still I was looking for some comments on the recording. I just started messing around with it and would like to hear some comments regarding the mix and recording.

i like the tones of all the instruments. i think the mix is good too. maybe push the keyboard up a bit, cause it adds alot of colour to the song.
