Film scores

Post by No Wave Casio Kitsch » Tue Sep 09, 2003 1:23 pm

I'm really liking the trend of movies having original scores again. Some I really enjoy: Pushing Tin (by Anne Dudley from The Art Of Noise...she also did The Full Monty and American History X as well as a killer album with Jaz Coleman) and The RZA's score for Ghost Dog: The Way Of The Samurai. I find that one especially interesting. In the insert of the DVD it mentions him researching classical music, specifically, Prokofiev's "Peter and the Wolf" and his use of leitmotifs.

What are some original scores you really dig??

My favorite score for a few years now is Elfman's "Planet of the Apes"; ...very tribal, w/lots-o drums, yet there's still a symphonic vibe.

I loved the music for "Amelie." My favorite soundtrack in quite a while.

"Dancer in the Dark" had some incredible music. Some of my favorite work from Bjork.

"The Road to Perdition" had an awesome score. I've really been digging that one recently.

I really enjoyed "the Fellowship of the Ring" soundtrack, though the war songs don't really do it for me.

Danny elfman always deserves a mention.

"The Piano" had an excellent score.

"Last of the Mohicans" had some good ones (I like celtic music).

There are more, but tose are the ones I've been listening to most recently.
I am wangtacular.

Ornette Colemen and Howard Shores's score from NAKED LUNCH. Maybe my favorite of all time.

Dancer in the Dark is excellent as well. And I always held PG's Last Temptation of Christ in high regard, though more as a standalone work. I don't think it worked as a score to that movie.

I JUST watched that. As in, last night. Yeah I liked the jazzier stuff, haven't heard the soundtrack by itself. I am not usually into soundtracks on their own... the 'big orchestral score' is beginning to drive me crazy. To prove my geekiness: I have been rocking out to Popol Vuh's main theme to Herzog's "Aguirre, Wrath of God" all week... really depressing 5-min or so synth thing. Beautiful. To bad Popol Vuh got all New Age-y. Also I am a sucker for Satie and Ligetti who are co-opted into soundtracks all the time (Kubrick dug Ligetti: see 2001, the unfortunate Eyes Wide Shut). Oh! The soundtrack to Tarkovsky's Stalker is so awesome. Gorgeous, gorgeous, gorgeous. The soundtrack to a 160m movie is under 20m long. !!!!

Yeah, it can rock when it's done well, but I'm more into scores that are using more contemporary music.

The "Bladerunner" soundtrack by Vangelis is the greatest. Beautiful stuff...

And "Signs" is fantastic!

"Aliens" has a great soundtrack. Very eerie...

Blade Runner and Taxi Driver for sure.

John McEntire's score for "Reach the Rock" was really cool as well.

Has to be the Vangelis version of the former though. Can't stand the American Orchestra job. Yeuch.

Taxi Driver OST is good, but I was a bit disappointed. I got it recently on vinyl, see. Anyone got any other ideas for THE '70s NY vibe OST? I saw The Taking of Pelham 123' on eBay recently. Some bootlegged vinyl version with no proper sleeve. Fancied that, but bottled on the bidding.
