Prog-Rock Fans?

Post by Phil Owl » Thu Oct 09, 2003 10:29 am

Anyone here a rabid prog-rock fan like this Owl?

Do you get chills up your spine at the sound of Mini-Moogs and Mellotrons?

Do you thrill to death-defying passages in 17/8?

Do you love the sound of clattering percussion, improvised madness and twisted guitarists who play sitting down?

Let's hear from you--------

yes - I never understood why we are supposed to be embarrassed to admit that we like pro-rock. so what if it's self-indulgent, etc.?

i love the stooges as much as the next guy, but sometimes classically-trained rock musicians make great music too!

well, i paid $30 to go see Yes last summer. does that make me a prog rock guy?

by the way, as you mention above, the moogs and the mellotrons are great, but someone take rick wakeman's korg triton away from him. boy that sucked.

actually i hate most prog-rock. but i like Yes for some reason. Does Styx count? i love Styx.

but as soon as someone grabs one of those chapman sticks.. that's when i reach for my revolver.

Genesis fan, all the way. Mostly the Phil Collins stuff, contrary to popular opinion. Dodo/Lurker (Abacab) has a great synth solo. The Brazilian (Invisible Touch) is a bombastic, huge song. In The Air Tonight has that wicked vocoder.

Do you guys consider Pink Floyd to be prog?

i love floyd, but i consider them to be more psych than prog.

the do have album side songs (atom heart mother sort of stuff), but it is less "classically influenced" than just extended psych jams...

now that later stuff... sort of prog.... dark side of the moon might be the closest thing to prog, but it is pretty pop.

good question.

I love prog! Yes, Rush, Crimson, Genesis, Dream Theater, Kansas (yeah, I consider them somewhat prog-ish).

Anyone listened to Spock's Beard? I really dig 'em.

Yay Prog! It's hard to write a song and not put it in 7/8. early genesis, plus Trick of the tail, Yes, Crimson, Tull, etc,

I've been getting more obscure, with mixed results. Le Orme? Great. Pawn hearts by Van der graaf, HATED it. The Mars Volta is good, Xitizen Kane I like, looking to get some Banco or PFM.

Who else keeps looking up Mellotrons on Ebay??

Im a retarded die hard king crimson fan (does this mean Im going to go bald?) but Ive got to say, the ultimate prog rock band is T2.

check out T2. The record with the handdrawn cover with like, a dude in a boat or something just totally rules. 1969 king crimson was pissed off when they heard that shit.

My first rock concerts as a 13 year old were Jethro Tull, Yes and Rush. (Marillion opened for Rush). There was no escape after that summer. I even got my wife into King Crimson. Now we're working out a prog band on our own.
