Good guitar / music shops in NYC?
Good guitar / music shops in NYC?
Okay. I'm a really poor planner and sorry for asking so late, but i was wondering if you have suggestions for good music shops / guitar shops / vintage guitar shops / cheap good pawn places. I'm in brooklyn and manhattan tomorrow (tuesday). Any suggestions are appreciated.
Thanks!
Thanks!

I should also say more specifically i play harmony guitars exclusively and like to look for analog synths. Thanks.

There are many instrument stores around 48th St between 6th & 7th Avenues (Manhattan). The biggest one is probably Sam Ash.
Also, there are a few guitar stores in the village.
This is the only one coming to mind right now:

Just across the river in New Jersey:

The village boasts many great CD/record stores as well. Tower is at 4th street and Broadway.
Two others that are good for more non-commercial tastes:
Other Music (across the street from Tower)
http://www.othermusic.com/
and, Kim's on St. Mark's Place. There are a bunch of used CD/record stores on St. Mark's...

damnit lear, get back here we need you! jk. no really. i'll email you.
the only shop i remember going to in nyc was rogue music. they had a lot of synths. there was also a store on that same street that had my tape machine in the window like it was a mannequin - such a wierd thing to see. as if we were at the mall and there were all the new fall fashions being paraded... here's a 20 yr old tape machine!
well, it drew me in the store.

If you buy from Rogue and you don't live in town, give what you're buying a careful looking over.
So much used stuff goes through there that they don't always seem to test it as thoroughly as they could. At least that's been my experience.

Remember "We Buy" on 48th street? I used to visit there almost every time I was in the city. I think I actually bought a Hagstrom there once.

Thanks alot for the replies. I went to a total of 0 shops because im totally lazy. I have, however, printed this stuff out. I'll be there again soon and will actually make it a point to do stuff. I tried seeing Bliss Blood play as voodoo Lounge but that got cancelled. If you are in new york check out her and the guy from helmet in the moonlighters. They are rad. Avenue Q was HILARIOUS too. See it now.
Ottokbremikaya! I'm totally back in the message board fold. I lost my job and was focusing on recording and doing freelance graphic design. That has all changed though.. well not really. I'm still busy.
Thanks again for the suggestions. I'm much better prepared for next time.

Here's more:
1) 30th st. Vintage Guitars (actually across the street from Rogue). It's well hidden, but well worth it. In my opinion, the best for a lot of things
2) Mojo Guitars (st.marks btwn. 1st and A). Small, but a lot of character. Also good at repairs
3) Chelsea guitars (23rd st. next to the Chelsea Hotel)
4) Main Drag Music (somewhere in williamsburg, but then you actually have to go to williamsburg)
5) First Flight music (1st ave btwn 10th and 11th). Nothing particularly amazing, but nice guys who get the job done.
