Check out the feedback they left for each other afterwards, it looks like the poor guy actually paid up.

awhile back some dude sold a ps2 box on ebay for $400 or so... and it wasn't even a special edition packaging-- just the normal one. apparently bidders didn't understand that "box" meant just that.

here is an archived version of it: http://www.whattheheck.com/ebay/ps2box.html

check out that site for more sweet action.

Yeah, he's a dumbass.

But at the same time if you're selling a box, and you really mean to be selling the box, don't you think you'd say to the bidders, "whoa! slow down, this is only a box."? I would. If you're trying not to be deceptive in your auction, it seems only obvious that you would spell it out clearly THIS IS ONLY THE CARDBOARD BOX, and even then, if bidding got out of hand, you'd contact the bidders and give them the scoop. It's really weird to me how much people get away with on ebay as sellers, and how willing we are to blame it on stupid buyers. This seller was fairly clear in his description, but I've seen way worse, and seen many people (often on this board) make excuses for such sellers. Screw that. Either you're being perfectly clear, or you're trying to deceive. There's no "pretty clear" or "only deceiving a little but acceptable amount."

It reminds me of the episode of Cheers where Cliff goes on Jeopardy and his final Jeopardy answer is "Who are three people who have never been in my kitchen?" It's true, but it's not True.

I agree, totally and probably purposefully misleading. Especially that playstation add. That one really sucks. If I were the buyer and got scooped, I'd try to recover my losses back through ebay. I think the guy has a legitimate beef that it was not made explicitly clear that the auction was for a box only.

I just got this treatment on an x-files boxset I was buying someone as a gift. Dude had a photo of the North American version but the fine print said 'not photo of actual item, actual item may vary, is not american version' or something. And yes it turned out to be the bargain basement asian version. I was just overzealous 'cause it would have been an awesome but not unrealistic deal for the american version... so I saw the picture, went 'holy shit' then clicked buy it now... then saw the the line. DOH.

So I paid $20 more (after shipping) for this than these Hong Kong versions usually go for, damnit. Wow I felt like an idiot, can't really blame the seller 'cause he did say it, I just didn't pay attention. Still, his presentation was misleading. bah

i think the seller was OBVIOUSLY trying to get a lot of money and being deceptive because he knew someone wouldnt be paying enough attention...
so the seller is not trustable
but the buyer is still a dumbass

hmmmm.....

maybe the buyer was a little slow?
maybe the buyer might have been slighty, mentally retarded?
maybe the buyer tends to trust people more than others?

does that still make it ok for the seller?

lying is lying.

I'm glad we're all talking about this. Over in General a couple of weeks back somebody got totally reamed for suggesting he'd been duped into buying a worthless piece of junk. Guys were jumping all over him: "why'd you pay $500 if you didn't know what it was". A good question, for sure. But the ad was obviously meant to deceive: an audio dealer selling a preamp not meant for audio signals doesn't even mention that fact in his ad? Come on!!!

Yeah, i remember that thread too trashy. I think it's pretty sad that people just want to mislead and pull a fast one rather than feel good about things. The sadder thing really is that people do indeed feel good about pulling a fast one. Something to brag about? I think not.

Actually, I just noticed that most of the bids are by two people who have no feedback at all. I bet they're just the seller trying to bid it up so someone seeing it at the last minute will assume it's really a mic and bid without thinking.
