inverseroom

Post by dubold » Sat Jun 12, 2004 3:06 pm

For those who don't know, inverseroom, aka J. Robert Lennon, does stuff other than record... like write. He's in the most recent issue of Harper's.

I've read some of the stuff on his website, and it's pretty good. too broke to buy any books right now, so i'm trying to get his stuff through the library.
anyway, I'm not affiliated with him in any way -- just trying to promote good books.

I've been on a J. Robert Lennon reading kick for the past few weeks, having just finished "On The Night Plain" about a week ago. He's got 4 novels (to my knowledge) published: the above, "The Light of Falling Stars", "The Funnies", and "Mailman".

They all kick major literary ass. Seriously, not a clunker in the bunch.

My curiosity was piqued to read Inverseroom's stuff by a post a while back in which he mentioned that one of his books had been optioned by a film production company to be developed as a movie.

My personal fave is "Mailman", for reasons specific to me only, and should not indicate that any of the others are inferior in any way. All of the novels are accessible and thought-provoking. He has a flair for character, the subject matter is grounded in worthwhile issues (especially that of family, and also love, of course), and two of the books especially showcase a darkly comic bent, even absurd at times, which is spot-on. I found myself taking extra smoke breaks at work in order to burn through a few more pages.

I am relatively ignorant of the contemporary fiction scene right now, as I usually don't read a whole lot of fiction (I do a bit of writing, and reading fiction while writing it does me no good -- it can lead to subconscious plagiarism. It also usually distracts me and keeps me from getting work of my own done). So I can blame Inverseroom's talent for keeping me from finishing anything. But it's worth it. I'd say that he's worthy of the same kind of attention being paid to Rick Moody, Jonathan Franzen, any writer out there riding a wave of major exposure. I didn't know he'd gotten published in Harper's, but I'm not surprised at all to hear it.

McSweeney's is a very cool small publisher. They put out a quarterly collection of fiction, each with a different theme and always with cool packaging. #12 featured "20-Minute Short Stories," including ones written by the Old 97's Rhett Miller, Galxie 500/Luna's Dean Wareham, and our very own J. Robert Lennon. Recommended.

I've read The Funnies and Mailman. I dug 'em both quite a bit. I got a big kick discovering the library I work at owns JRL's stuff. I was like, wow! someone from the TO Board!

If I had to pick one, I'd probably go with Mailman, since it's got a bit of that epic thing going on. It also struck a chord with me in that angry-at-the-world kind of way. Awesome, far-out stuff. Very original.

I'm gonna have to look up the Harper's article at work today.

Wow. McSweeney's rocks - everyone go buy the Non-required Reading series. Hey, did Dave Eggers sign your paycheck? You could double that cash by selling the autograph on ebay. :)

I would like to check your novels out. You should make a TapeOp-compendium-package-deal.
I get satisfaction of three kinds. One is creating something, one is being paid for it and one is the feeling that I haven?t just been sitting on my ass all afternoon.

Robert, I must come across as the most ungrateful person in the world for not writing you back but I really dug the CD you sent out last month. Great collection of songs, and I'm very fond of the "under 60 second" thing myself.

Good work!
