a reliable private source off site wrote:We had a couple rentals for Lollapalooza (our business specializes in renting vans to touring musicians) and of course this is a big setback for us. From what I have heard the main problem wasn't ticket sales (Major markets were doing just fine, and Baltimore was already sold out). It was that Clear Channel decided they didn't want to support what is basically a liberal festival. With organizations like MoveOn.org doing major promotions over the whole tour (which in turn were being documented by VH-1 for a series) Clear Channel decided to pull the plug. Without Clear Channel there was no place to play, since as we all know, they own or control almost every large venue able to accommodate a festival of this size. The promoters aren't saying anything because they have to do business with these guys, but that's the back story as I heard it.

man, someone sure fucked this thing up. look at that line-up! maybe everyone wanted too much cash?

either way, I think the tour schedules of a bunch of major bands just took a summer detour. yowza. maybe they'll all go back to little clubs?

btw - does anyone get excited about Flaming Lips anymore? I saw them on that line up and just sighed. They need a new record or something quick.

It looks like conflict with clearchannel is the reason the tour was cancelled. I dont know that the conflict would have been over; however, I'm sure there are many things that could have started it. The message left on their website suggests it:
"You can imagine the dismay I share at this moment with the artists and musicians who were looking forward to the tour. Lollapalooza could no longer see fit to continue this year. Our plight is a true indication of the general health of the touring industry and it is across musical genres. Unexhausted is our virtue. We are taking Lollapalooza back and plan on rebuilding and recreating the festival in surroundings more conducive to the cultural experience we've become known for."
- Perry Farrell
Clearchannel was very involved with the tour, not only providing probably all the venues but also was doing the ticket sales through ticketmaster and their own website. There are a number of possible issues that could have been a problem for either CC or the Lolla organizers. It may have been political (at least 4 of the main bands have been quite outspoken about disliking George Bush and clearchannel). However, to me it sounds like a creative issue that the lollapalooza organizers could not agree on with clearchannel. It doesnt seem logical for clearchannel to want to cancel the tour seeing as it was one of the largest this summer.
