The Next Tape Op Cover Album Project

Post by swingdoc » Fri Jul 23, 2004 9:41 pm

Hey guys, the Abbey Road project is / was very cool.
It might be a good idea to try to knock out one or two cover albums a year.
Lots of good reasons for doing this, but suffice it to say its fun.

If we wait 'till the one album is completely done, it would take a year or so before the next one gets started.
So maybe once the project is mostly underway, then another could start up. That way there's always something to work on and we can include more folks.

So whats next?

I prefer something "classic" (whatever that means). I'd rather not do another Beattles album (no offense Ringo).
Throw out some ideas and we'll see what sticks...

I hope this flys....

I'm down. I'm sad I missed out on the last one. Someone suggested "Tom Waits - Rain Dogs," which would definitely yield some really different and interesting results. If that one happens, I totally call "Time" right now. But yeah, I'm down for whatever, as long as I'm semi-familiar with the music. Boob sauce.
I am wangtacular.

"Rain Dogs" would be a most excellent choice. If that happens, I'm calling "Jockey Full of Bourbon"

Other possibilities:

Husker Du- Zen Arcade

Any Joy Division Release

The Clash- London Calling

???

Maybe Neil Young's "After The Gold Rush"?

I'd like to do "Tell Me Why" - love that song

Yeah I totally want to get in on this. I dont have Rain Dogs, but if Tom Waits did it, it can't be bad. My vote is in for that one.

If it's okay, I would really like to get involved in these, if ya'll don't mind having someone who's drummerless and 16-bit, and not as insanely talented as Bear or MarqueeMoon involved! I'm really kinda regretting I just lurked for the last one. Abbey Road is one of my faves.

What bout "Exile On Main Street". Something that's a double album would be nice, get more people into it. As long as it's an album with a lot of songs, is what I'm getting at. Or maybe do Joy Division as a package, Unknown Pleasures and Closer, "Love Will Tear Us Apart" -- anything they released while they were still together. I'd love to hear Bear do "Love Will Tear Us Apart," now that I think of it. That would rule.

This is a really curveball goofy idea I had that would take a lot of research and I don't expect anybody to jump on the idea too enthusiastically right away, but it might be cool to pick a week in classic rock history (like '60s or '70s) and have everybody cover their own pick of whatever was on the charts that particular week. I'm thinking of one of those weeks like in the late '60s, where you'd have Tom Jones keeping the Beatles out of #1, with the Stones and the Who and Aretha Franklin and Sammy Davis Jr. and Sergio Mendez and Sgt. Barry Sadler and Simon & Garfunkel and Steppenwolf and god knows who else in the top 40. That might be fun.

I'd also like to get in on this one. I like a lot of the album ideas that have been mentioned; if we do rain dogs, I'd take 'blind love'.

Someone mentioned Neil Young After The Goldrush. That would be cool. Or Harvest or Rust Never Sleeps. I already have a cover of My My, Hey Hey if anyone likes the idea of doing Rust.

I missed out on the Abby Road thing. Are these songs available somewhere that I can listen to them or get a copy from someone?
If it sounds good, it is good.

Someone's gotta decide.. Is it Tom Waits? I'm willing to sit this one out to let others have a chance, but I'll take "Singapore" if nobody wants it.
