October 14 - MEDFORD ? President Bush taught three Oregon schoolteachers a new lesson in irony ? or tragedy ? Thursday night when his campaign removed them from a Bush speech and threatened them with arrest simply for wearing t-shirts that said ?Protect Our Civil Liberties,? the Democratic Party of Oregon reported.

The women were ticketed to the event, admitted into the event, and were then approached by event officials before the president?s speech. They were asked to leave and to turn over their tickets ? two of the three tickets were seized, but the third was saved when one of the teachers put it underneath an article of clothing.

"The U.S. Constitution was not available on site for comment, but expressed in a written statement support for ?the freedom of speech? and ?of the press? among other civil liberties," a Democratic news release said.

The Associated Press and local CBS affiliate KTVL captured Bush?s principled stand against civil liberties in news accounts published immediately after the event.

The AP reported:

Three Medford school teachers were threatened with arrest and escorted from the event after they showed up wearing T-shirts with the slogan "Protect our civil liberties." All three said they applied for and received valid tickets from Republican headquarters in Medford.

The women said they did not intend to protest. "I wanted to see if I would be able to make a statement that I feel is important, but not offensive, in a rally for my president," said Janet Voorhies, 48, a teacher in training.

?We chose this phrase specifically because we didn't think it would be offensive or degrading or obscene," said Tania Tong, 34, a special education teacher.

Thursday?s event in Oregon sets a new bar for a Bush/Cheney campaign that has taken extraordinary measures to screen the opinions of those who attend Bush and Cheney speeches. For months, the Bush/Cheney campaign has limited event access to those willing to volunteer in Bush/Cheney campaign offices. In recent weeks, the Bush/Cheney campaign has gone so far as to have those who voice dissenting viewpoints at their events arrested and charged as criminals.

Thursday?s actions in Oregon set a new standard even for Bush/Cheney ? removing and threatening with arrest citizens who in no way disrupt an event and wear clothing that expresses non-disruptive party-neutral viewpoints such as ?Protect Our Civil Liberties.?

When Vice President Dick Cheney visited Eugene, Oregon on Sept. 17, a 54-Year old woman named Perry Patterson was charged with criminal trespass for blurting the word "No" when Cheney said that George W. Bush has made the world safer.

One day before, Sue Niederer, 55, the mother of a slain American soldier in Iraq was cuffed and arrested for criminal trespass when she interrupted a Laura Bush speech in New Jersey. Both women had tickets to the event.

Uh, it's from the A.P. - That should be your first clue that it "just might be biased a wee little bit."

It's VERY rare that they tell the whole story.

I'm an independent, and I try to stay away from political threads. But anyone who can't see that 90% of the media (including the A.P.) is in the Kerry camp just isn't paying attention.

And I have to say that I don't blame the Bush camp for being a little on-edge lately with all the violence towards their campaign HQ's across the country. Still, I'm sure there's much more to this story than A.P. is reporting, as there usually is.

I've been paying very close attention and I think that opinion is laughable. Who do the heads of the big media companies give money to? Bush. Bush supports media consolidation, so these companies can just get bigger and more powerful. They love him. Even the CEO of Viacom, who self-identifies as a liberal Democrat, has said he supports Bush in the election, because it's in Viacom's interest.

Associated Press articles are used in almost every local paper in the US. Look at the by-line in your local paper and you'll see what I mean. Some local papers are almost entirely made up of AP stories. Even big-city papers like the NY Times get a lot of their stories from the AP. Fox uses stories from the AP. All kinds of media sources, from all over the political spectrum, use AP stories. Would that be true if MM was right about them being biased in favor of the left? If it were shown such a bias existed, a big stink would be raised and they'd lose a lot of business. They're held to a higher standard because they are the main news source for much of the news media.

I've never heard they lean left, even from the conservatives.

Like most americans, i do not pay enough attention to have a valid opinion, but i do. I believe that Bush is a war happy, hey look daddy my dick is as big as yours, ass. However i think that Kerry... well i dont really know anything about Kerry, and mabey thats why i wanna vote for him. He couldnt screw anything up worse than our dear friend and fasicst President George W.

But likesay I really should keep my mouth shut... i gain my information thrugh others opinions, which if ya know my father is not allways a good thing.

I'm not sure I would consider 'Central Oregon's Free News Source' to be objective. Especially when they say "local CBS affiliate KTVL captured Bush?s principled stand against civil liberties in news accounts published immediately after the event." That's a little too editorial to be news, IMO. Not that I doubt any of it happened, of course!

I mean look at how Clinton misused the FBI to assault his political enemies! And Reagan had the DEA! And Bush Sr the CIA! Anyone see a pattern here?

I voted for him... I'm by no means a straight-ticket guy though. I vote on the issues. There are plenty of Dems out there that are cool. Plenty of Pubs also. Back in the 80's & 90's I was a pretty hardcore Dem. If they'd run someone worth voting for again, it's not like I wouldn't consider the issues and weigh the facts. But Kerry? What the hell were they thinking? I can't believe this race is as close as it is. Dean would've put it away (although I don't like Dean). Lieberman (who I DO like) wasn't "sissy-spined" enough to keep the party happy, but probably also would have easily won over enough to call it a day.

But the media - Come on - Their own studies (that no one ever hears about for some reason) point at a number somewhere around 90% who consider themselves "either somewhat liberal, liberal, or very liberal" while something like 4% said "either somewhat conservative, conservative or very conservative."

I'm not talking about the people who sign the checks - I'm talking about the people who do the job.

All you have to do is watch the network news for an hour or two... You're fooling yourself if you don't notice the bias.

Sorry, I should post an example while making such a claim -

The Halperin ABC memo and Ted Koppel for just one example - Halperin suddenly feels that it's their responsibility to "set the record straight" on Kerry's V-Nam service. So, taking his Silver Star as an example, they go and interview VIETCONG and take their word for it instead of a collection of decorated veterans.

Okay, pretty normal for ABC, but the VC went against KERRY'S OWN BIOGRAPHY.

His authorized bio said a "kid in a loincloth" and the vets said the same. Problem solved, right? Not with ABC... The VC said there were a dozen or so. If three communist torture experts say it, well gee, let's just ignore the recollection of dozens of decorated vets - And Kerry himself.

So ABC goes over Kerry's OWN WORDS, to Vietnam (where Kerry is honored AS A WAR HERO in the North Vietnamese War Museum) looking to "set the record straight for the American people."

In the words of Democrat Senator Zell Miller: "Come on..."

Granted, a retarded monkey can see the bias in that one. The CBS and NBC garbage is slightly more subtle.

And I'm certainly not saying it's all biased - But when they can make a conservative look bad, they jump at it. When they can make a liberal look bad, they run from it.

The Kerry campaign does not bar dissenters from their speeches and rallies. And indeed, these dissenters have disrupted these events, and what Kerry, Edwards, and (especially) Teresa Heinz Kerry have done is refute them, confidently, in public. That's the way decent people disagree.

And why not trust a news source from Bend or Medford?

Even if most of the journalists lean left, it makes little difference when the vast majority of editors are firmly on the right. They're the ones that call the shots. Your swift boat example is way off the mark. Why wouldn't journalists want to set the record straight against blatant lies? That's their job. If Bush were accused of, say, raping his daughters, I have no doubt they would do the same thing. Zell Miller a Democrat? Yeah, right. For him to call himself a Democrat in the past in order to get elected shows how much integrity he has. Has he got his rabies shot yet?

For the record, I never said I didn't trust them, but a sentence like this clearly belongs on the editorial page. It appears that it was presented as "news."

"local CBS affiliate KTVL captured Bush?s principled stand against civil liberties in news accounts published immediately after the event."
