Do you dig "lo-fi"?

Post by tylerbcrawford » Wed Oct 27, 2004 4:46 pm

I know lots of us here are audio geeks and such but just wondering if anyone else out there loves "lo-fi" stuff? What lo-fi bands are you into?

Personally Im a big Beat Happening fan.

i dont think music can be lo-fi..only recordings..lo-fi as a recording style is cool i think..but i dont associate bands as lo-fi bands..

one record i like a lot is Elf Power's Vainly Clutching at Phantom Limbs..that sounds "lo-fi" to me and in a way where it adds to the songs somehow..

mark linkous of sparkle horse mixes a lot of low-fi and hi-fi in his recordings. i love both parts of the albums.

but then if i listen to really old l0-fi guided by voices stuff i just wish it was recorded better. there is just a lot of the melodies and stuff that just sound like crap. really the lo fi sound only works in moderation or with certain bands. like some old crappily recorded live ramones is listenable, but crappily recorded live flaming lips, not so much.

It's always funny to me when people call the Microphones lo-fi (though Justin has a different take on lo-fi obviously). It's like, 2" 16-track, tube Neumanns... total lo-fi.

Back on on topic, I grew up on Pavement and Guided by Voices.

Back when Tape Op still had the Under the Radar section, I ordered a free CD from a group (really a one man operation) called the Foibles.
I believe the address to order it was crankandrattle@hotmail.com
It was recorded on a cassette 8 track. Although he did it himself, it often sounds like a group performing. I think the songs are great. I still listen to it all the time.
He sent me a second cd that was actually a cdr with a whole bunch of new tunes. These tended to be more on the humorous side, and while of a similar vein...they did not posess the range of the first one artistically.
Anyhow...the recording inspires me and I call it genius just for that reason.
It's all relative you know.

Anyhow, the point is...it's low-fi for sure. I don't know that it would be as good if it wasn't actually.

During the late '80s and early '90s, lo fidelity became not only a description of the recording quality of a particular album, but it also became a genre onto itself.
from allmusic.com

There is some stuff that is in the "lo-fi" genre sounds decently recorded.

Yeah, totally, but I mean compared to alot of stuff its pretty lofish. I mean everythings all sloppy and loud and stuff. Yeah its a 2 inch, but I mean, its not like a bazillion dollar recording.

Also, One Chord to Another by Sloan. That's 2" 16-track as well, but with 4-track cassette drums.

genre : A category of artistic composition, as in music or literature, marked by a distinctive style, form, or content..so what purely musical (recording production excluded) style form or content means lo-fi ?
