Why Bush won? (for a paper-- please help!)
I need to write a paper for govt class explaining why Bush won the election. It needs to be based on anything and everything, from exit polls to known strategies of each party and how they all compare.
As always, I'm doing it last minute! Hah...
So if anyone can offer any insight, artlcles, information, etc, it would be awesome.
I keep hearing stuff about this "Karl Rove" guy and how his plan was genius, how his methods will be studied years from now, how the things he did really helped energize the voters and win Bush the election. Can anyone explain this in detail?
If I can get as much information from actual sources as possible it would be great, so that I may be able to quote articles and analyze them.
Thanks...

i'd focus on how the Republican party targeted Democratic counties and stripped registered voters in key states like Florida and Ohio. Check out the movie "Unprecedented." A couple journalists in that movie are focused upon and you could find articles to reference.

Re: Why Bush won? (for a paper-- please help!)
thanks for the input...
unfortunately, i've had so much else to do that i have to finish the paper today. ack! (but that's ok, i've done papers in a few hours many times before)
my point with this is that i'm trying to find as many sources online as possible: articles, essays, editorials, etc. because like any paper, you have to "support your statements"... so i totally agree that living in texas it's easy to see why just based on the overall feeling and vibe in the air, but that's not enough for a paper.

heh, thanks... but in essays, it's always all about making statements and opinions but supporting them with evidence and actual sources. so it's important to quote and analyze from there. i don't just copy what other people say, never.bigtoe wrote:i'll not help you cut and paste your way thru school, young man.

Yeah, I have been, but I don't know about quoting it. I can just see that...bobbydj wrote:There's loads of links all over the political threads here, and creot too. Damn. Get on with it already.
"Bla bla this is a quote," (bobbydj, 3).
Then I can list Tapeop and Creot in the bibliography.

Re: Why Bush won? (for a paper-- please help!)
allow me to be more specific, guys:
I am looking for any online article or editorial or information on how Bush won the election using the moral value card. I should hope that's pretty specific. If you guys have seen any such articles, please please please let me know!
Also, I am very interested in what role Karl Rove plays in all of this, and if you know of any good articles/information on him regarding Bush's victory, please hook a brotha up!
ps: and BELIEVE me, I have been using google, but sometimes it's hard to find what's really good, since they all argue every last thing.

PM'd you some articles, Wing.

He didn't win with the 'moral value' card, though.
1. Exit polls from 1992-2000 show that 'moral values' actually scored higher than it did this year.
2. Nationwide, Bush's popular vote total increased by 3%.The states with anti-gay marriage initiatives on the ballot also drew 3% this year on average. So it essentially had no effect.
9/11 brought alot of uncertainty and I believe Bush won because of residual fear that the white Christian American life in this country might be threatened. Middle America's natural defense systems kicked in and they voted the way they did. This is pretty light article but it may be a starting point:
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/programmes/3970901.stm
If you want to use the Karl Rove angle, here is a good article entitled 'Four More Years Attributed to Rove's Strategy':
http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/ar ... 4Nov6.html
and here is an online chat where the author explains it in further detail:
http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/ar ... 4Nov5.html
You'll need to sign up for the Washington Post, but it's free, quick and it's easily the best newspaper in the country. They did endorse Kerry, but they have plenty of well-known conservative commentators like George F. Will and Charles Krauthammer.
