Indie Labels By Decade

Post by Girl Toes » Tue Nov 23, 2004 11:05 am

So I was just thinking about how each decade has its own indie label. As such:

1950's: Sun
1960's: Motown
1990's: SubPop

See, maybe I'm wrong though. Because I can only think of HALF of the decades. I can't think of the 80's, 70's, or what ever the hell this decade is called. Any ideas?

well, los Brits call a zero a "nought." So this decade is the "noughties."

in the '70s, Virgin was an indie. The Pistols were on Virgin at the time.

Often we say 'oh' instead of zero. I actually find the number 'zero' to be quite offensive for some unknown reason.
The large print giveth, and the small print taketh away.

50s: the hundreds and hundreds of tiny regional-or-smaller labels that released tons of great r&b, rockabilly, and just early rock'n'roll in general

60s: the hundreds and hundreds of tiny regional-or-smaller labels that released tons of great garage and folk-rock.

It's kinda funny, when I think indie label, I think of stuff starting with the 80's and 90's, when in reality, most recorded music has been released on indie labels.

70s: ESP disk

Edit: more 60s than 70s really. I really wanted another good 70s choice but can't come up with one.

Dont know if you would want to call it the 80s or the 90s, but i would have to throw Dischord in there.

For New Zealand, it would have to be Flying Nun in the 80s.
