I saw him in 2002, and he at one point yelled "teleprompter! teleprompter!" when the right lyrics weren't up. And at another point, he said "You guys like surfin? Well, this songs about surfing. here's Surfin USA." Then after a brief pause, "Whoops, I mean here's Fun, Fun, Fun."

As for being in tune, it got better as the night progressed. It was pretty bad at the beginning though, and when I saw him on Conan a few years earlier.

I was really impressed how many of the obscure post-pet sounds songs he played that night, like Busy Doin Nothing. I saw him again at a free concert put on by an oldies station, and he only played the pre-pet sounds stuff, and it totally sucked.
