Desert Island Albums...

What 5 albums would you have if you were stranded on a deserted island?
Not necessarily the best ones, but ones you wouldn't get tired listening to. And diverse enough to cover some ground.

just the american folk anthology. its 6 disks, but really one "record" so i figure i could sneak it by the 5 disk limit.

anyway... i dont think it is possible to get sick of that record. plus on a desert island you will want to learn the whole thing and play the songs yourself... teach your civilization these songs, and maybe they will develop rock and roll in some sort of convergent evolution scenario.

best record ever, bar none. you could argue that it is the single most influencial record ever.

Here goes:

Superchunk - Indoor Living. Not widely thought of as their best, but for some reason it's always stuck out to me. Possibly because it was their current album during the height of my appreciation for the band. By far my favorite production on a 'Chunk album, and some of my favorite songs too.

Olivia Tremor Control - a mix I made combining highlights from their Dusk at Cubist Castle and Black Foliage albums. I know that's cheating, but it's too damn hard to pick one!

Beatles - Revolver. Duh.

Neutral Milk Hotel - In the Aeroplane Over the Sea. I'm guessing after all that time spent in isolation without contact to "civilization," I'd probably start to go crazy. I can't think of a better album to go crazy to.

Wilco - another toss up. Although I love YHF, for practicality's sake, I'd probably go with Being There or Summerteeth since they're all over the proverbial map. I'm going to have to listen to these albums for a long time, right?

These are all sooper well known, but I don't care, 'cause I still play 'em all to death. Not much ground covered here, but if 5 is the limit, I choose:


Stones: Exile. Never get tired of this one

Grateful Dead: Reconing. Yeah none of 'em can sing. Neither can I but it don't stop me from trying

Miles: so hard to choose! Probably wind up picking Birth of the Cool, 'cause Mulligan is on it too. Also I can't get Darn That Dream outa my mind. So weepy....

Zappa: again, so hard to choose. Reubin and the Jets or Sheik Yerbouti. Flip a coin here

Zepplin: Physical Graffiti. I like this one better'n most, and it has more music than the others

Sonic Youth - Sister. Everybody goes for Daydream Nation, but I just like the songs on Sister, plus it was my introduction to SY.


Pink Floyd - Darkside of The Moon. Enough said.


Marvin Gaye - What's Going on. Simply superb. A beautiful piece of work.


Tristeza - Spine and Sensory. Dreamy.


Kyuss - Blues for the Red Sun. I needed something a little on the heavy side for those "down" days.

You know, I picked up a bargain-bin copy of this LP about a month ago but haven't gotten around to actually listening to it yet. In honor of you, AstroDan, I will finally do so.

If you are are thinking of Dream Signals...then I agree with you. Spine and Sensory and the Gravity EP are keepers, but the early 7"s are my favorite. They did a split with the Aesee Lake (sp) that was beautiful.
