Desert Island Albums...

Post by DUC » Thu Jul 31, 2003 11:11 am

What 5 albums would you have if you were stranded on a deserted island?
Not necessarily the best ones, but ones you wouldn't get tired listening to. And diverse enough to cover some ground.

just the american folk anthology. its 6 disks, but really one "record" so i figure i could sneak it by the 5 disk limit.

anyway... i dont think it is possible to get sick of that record. plus on a desert island you will want to learn the whole thing and play the songs yourself... teach your civilization these songs, and maybe they will develop rock and roll in some sort of convergent evolution scenario.

best record ever, bar none. you could argue that it is the single most influencial record ever.

in case you dont own it for some strange reason.

Here goes:

Superchunk - Indoor Living. Not widely thought of as their best, but for some reason it's always stuck out to me. Possibly because it was their current album during the height of my appreciation for the band. By far my favorite production on a 'Chunk album, and some of my favorite songs too.

Olivia Tremor Control - a mix I made combining highlights from their Dusk at Cubist Castle and Black Foliage albums. I know that's cheating, but it's too damn hard to pick one!

Beatles - Revolver. Duh.

Neutral Milk Hotel - In the Aeroplane Over the Sea. I'm guessing after all that time spent in isolation without contact to "civilization," I'd probably start to go crazy. I can't think of a better album to go crazy to.

Wilco - another toss up. Although I love YHF, for practicality's sake, I'd probably go with Being There or Summerteeth since they're all over the proverbial map. I'm going to have to listen to these albums for a long time, right?

These are all sooper well known, but I don't care, 'cause I still play 'em all to death. Not much ground covered here, but if 5 is the limit, I choose:

Stones: Exile. Never get tired of this one

Grateful Dead: Reconing. Yeah none of 'em can sing. Neither can I but it don't stop me from trying

Miles: so hard to choose! Probably wind up picking Birth of the Cool, 'cause Mulligan is on it too. Also I can't get Darn That Dream outa my mind. So weepy....

Zappa: again, so hard to choose. Reubin and the Jets or Sheik Yerbouti. Flip a coin here

Zepplin: Physical Graffiti. I like this one better'n most, and it has more music than the others
I thought this club was for musicians. Who let the drummer in here??

Sonic Youth - Sister. Everybody goes for Daydream Nation, but I just like the songs on Sister, plus it was my introduction to SY.
Image

Pink Floyd - Darkside of The Moon. Enough said.
Image

Marvin Gaye - What's Going on. Simply superb. A beautiful piece of work.
Image

Tristeza - Spine and Sensory. Dreamy.
Image

Kyuss - Blues for the Red Sun. I needed something a little on the heavy side for those "down" days.

you must first invent the universe...thank you very much."
Carl Sagan - Genius

nomovingparts - "scientist space rock"

word, eeldip. Though truth be told I like the 'lost' Volume 4 (2cd via Revenant) best. Back to reality, would probably go with:
Swans: Swans Are Dead
New Order: Power, Corruption and Lies
Young Marble Giants: Colossal Youth
Bill Davis and his Singing Dulcimer w/ Marianne Phelps: Sounds of the Smokies
Seclusion: Yukigafuru

Runners up... L. Cohen: Songs of Love and Hate, Nico: Desertshore, John Duncan: Incoming. Arrrgh! So painfully difficult.

Without a doubt, # 1 for me is:

Blue Oyster Cult: Agents of Fortune

following with...

Pixies: Doolittle (sick of it, but I would miss it)
American Graffiti Soundtrack
Beatles: White Album
Emmylou Harris: Anthology

*Reserve Album*

Guns 'n Roses: Appetite for Destruction (not a top fiver, but how could one live without this incredible record?)

You know, I picked up a bargain-bin copy of this LP about a month ago but haven't gotten around to actually listening to it yet. In honor of you, AstroDan, I will finally do so.

This was really difficult, and will probably change 5 minutes after I write this, but here goes - in no particular order:

1. Television - "Marquee Moon"

2. Love - "Forever Changes"

3. The Kinks - "Something Else"

4. Sun Ra - "Concert for the Comet Kohoutek"

5. anything with Astrud Gilberto, Antonio Carlos Jobim, and Stan Getz collaborating.

I can listen to any of these for the rest of my life.

Others which I would surely have to stash in a few body cavities to ensure their island-hopping status (again, in no particular order):

Rolling Stones - "Their Satanic Majesties Request"
Os Mutantes - "Everything is Possible"
John Coltrane - "A Love Supreme"
My Bloody Valentine - "Loveless"
Sun City Girls - "Torch of the Mystics"
The Shaggs - "Philosophy of the World"
Polvo - "Celebrate the New Dark Age"
Six Organs of Admittance - "Dark Noontide"
Neutral Milk Hotel - "In the Aeroplane, Over the Sea"
Rollerskate Skinny - "Horsedrawn Wishes" - CRIMINALLY UNDERRATED
Slapp Happy - "Casablanca Moon/Desperate Straights"
Bob Dylan - "Blood on the Tracks", maybe "Desire"
Frank Zappa/Mothers - "Freak Out"
The Pogues - "Rum, Sodomy, and the Lash"
Pink Floyd - "Piper at the Gates of Dawn"
Can - "Tago Mago"
Papa M - "Live from a Shark Cage"
Stereolab - "Dots and Loops"
Robert Wyatt - "Shleep"
Unwound - "Fake Train"
Tow Waits - "Frank's Wild Years"
Modern Lovers - S/T
Nico - "Chelsea Girls"
Low - "I Could Only Live in Hope"
Verve - "A Storm in Heaven"
Anything by Django Reinhardt or Claude Debussy

Whew! Sorry . . . I love music. :D

Thanks, A.L.!

It's very possible you may not like it, but I can't seem to get enough of it. It's a pretty ridiculous record; just my cup of meat.

If you are are thinking of Dream Signals...then I agree with you. Spine and Sensory and the Gravity EP are keepers, but the early 7"s are my favorite. They did a split with the Aesee Lake (sp) that was beautiful.
