Jump the Shark

I like to waste time at http://www.jumptheshark.com when I'm at work.

The premise involves pinpointing when a good show turned lousy. Ex. when Fonzie jumped the shark on Happy Days, hence the title. Others include when Parker Lewis Can't Lose became just Parker Lewis and lost the crazy sound FX, appearance of Gazoo ruining Flintstones etc.

Anyway, thought one could riff from a music perspective as well:

Grateful Dead: that Godchaux guy bought a god-awful cheesy keyboard
Bob Dylan: found God (jumped back in the mid-90s with Time Out of Mind)
Radiohead: released alternate version of Morning Bell on Amnesiac
Michael Jackson: dated a chimp

I don't know . . . could just be another way to piss each other off.

Awolski-- Greg Allman's not dead. Duane Allman is the one who died.

As far as Corgan whining, I'm assuming you refer to the first Smashing Pumpkins record.

my contribution:
--when Pearl Jam decided to stop writing good songs and mixing their records. So, about halfway through the making of Vs., basically.

--the whole '80s metal genre: when "Every Rose Has Its Thorn" came out and established that only power ballads could be hit singles, so every band had to have one.

--when Steve Perry fired Steve Smith and Ross Valory from Journey, and Neal Schon let him do it.

--"Kilroy Was Here."

My apologies, that was really dumb.

And by the Pumpkins, yeah, they rocked pre-Gish. You'd go see them and most songs had a blistering fast, but really good, guitar solo in the middle. It was the total icing on the cake with their music, or so I thought. I think there was some soloing on Gish, but after that Corgan focused on his songwriting to the detriment of hot guitar lix. Which I think took a big element away from the sound.

But that's not quite as bad as Deep Purple without Ritchie Blackmore. Or Yes with Trevor Horn singing. Or Yes with anybody singing.

I think Gish was a great record but increasingly couldn't stomache their latter records. Production-wise Siamese Dream is pretty dull and monotone and Mellon collie is patchy with iffy lyrics and an appauling name. I preferred Corgan when you didn't really know what he was on about lyrically. I like lots of the B-Sides around that time too.

Def Leppard's third album. Pete Willis rocked that band... Phil Collen ruined it for me. "Photograph?" "Rock, Rock Till You Drop?" Come on...

The first episode of "The Real World" was the downfall of TV as we know it, and when the "M" in "MTV" lost its meaning.

When ART started making the VLA in China (at least from what I hear about the newer ones).

Digital brick wall limiting. Possibly the most abused, to the point of destruction, thing in audio.

I agree about the earlier Pumpkins B-sides. Are those collected on a disc somewhere that isn't part of some big box set? That would be nice.

I have 2 or 3 cassettes that predate Gish. I wonder what those are worth on ebay?

Dude, Radiohead has NOT jumped the shark. "Hail to the Thief" is the definitive musical document of the Bush era.

As for me, I jumped it with my third "Best Compressor Under $200?" thread.
