PBR? What the ffffff...hell?

Post by Rodgre » Mon Aug 04, 2003 12:41 pm

I just saw a Pabst Blue Ribbon ad in the new Tape Op.

I've noticed in the last year, that PBR has gone from trailer park Perrier to the champagne of punk rock.

What gives? I don't drink at all, so i can't even comment on where PBR is on the totem pole of beer, but I'm starting to feel like there is a P.R. agency involved in making it "hip"

Anyone with me, or am I paranoid?

they're actually sponsoring local bands around here, or at least featuring them in their adds. had a "condolences" add in the mercury after the exploding hearts crash. i dunno, it just doesn't seem right somehow.

One of the things I miss the most about Baltimore is cans of National Bohemian (and the "Land of Pleasant Living" series, which is where I first learned of famous racehorse/movie subject Seabiscuit over 15 years ago ... who says that beer consumption can't be educational?).

i believe that it is called "natty bo"

with that strange accent on the "o"

nothing more baltimore than seeing 3 or 4 people hanging out on those strange 2 to 3 high marble steps outside the row house drinkin natty bo.

I do often drink PBR at bars. I like to think of it more as hipsters having made it socially acceptable to drink cheapass beer. More bars here have it now due to the demand.

I think it may have something to do with the Dennis Hopper quote from Blue Velvet, having slowly ingrained it's way into the hipster psyche over the years.

"Heineken? fuck that shit!..."

...you know.

PBR is great. Its cheap and its good. The only other beer I can think of that has the most bang for the buck is the mighty huber bock. a dollar a bottle, undiscounted. sure it tastes a little coppery, but after a few, its no different than a rolling rock or budweiser.

Didn't he also mention something like, "Pabst Blue Ribbon...the working man's beer."

I bought some 40s of PBR the other day for $1.70 a piece at a mini mart type place. If you are really broke and need to get drunk fast...just buy a 40 and drink it all within 10 minutes. It works. Believe me!

Hipsters drink the damnedest things, don't they? The other day I saw this guy drinking bleach straight from the bottle. It wasn't Clorox either, it was the Safeway brand: Western Family or whatever. That's just cool.

Spread the rumor, maybe we'll kill a few hipsters.

Absolutely. I started drinking it when it "became" what I always drank at shows (which is generally the only time I'm ever in a bar) - the cheapest beer served cold. It used to be Miller High Life, then somebody gave me a PBR and I've been hooked since. A six pack was 3 bucks where I came from. Given the choice, however, I'd take a porter or a stout over a lager anyday :)
