Good cello music?

Post by jamoo » Wed Jan 12, 2005 10:32 am

Can anyone recommend good cello-based music? All I have is Rasputina. :) It's good, but I think I'd like it better w/o vocals.

Here you go.

Nothing but cellos and looping.

Zoe Keating rocks.

Check out HANK ROBERTS.
The trio album (I'll Always Remember) is f'ing amazing and the rest is pretty darned great, too. There is an incredible variety in his body of work. He also played in the Bill Frisell Quartet way back when...check out the album "Where in the World" if you can find it!
Plus, he is truly the nicest guy on the planet, so buy his rekkids!

Believe it or not, Charlie Chaplin wrote music for the Cello. Check our "Oh! That Cello" for a performance of some of his works.

Thanks. I've checked out all the suggestions. Looks like the Elgar concerto is headlined by Yo Yo. I wish I had my bandwidth to check out the Roberts and Keating samples... soon

This is a shameless plug, but my friend Jeannine and I did a whole record of cello and viola and it's all instrumental. If you want one, PM me your address and i'll send you a copy for free.

"Looks like the Elgar concerto is headlined by Yo Yo."

i got a better one on D.G. from the late 90's i think...Cello Concerto / Enigma Variations. I find Yo Yo fairly boring. His records are snoozefests. The Enigma Variations are great too. Nothing too far out...sort of standard classical repertoire...but passionate. The build up to the main theme in the first movement is like biting into a york peppermint patty.

The Bach Cello Sonata's are amazing. I think the Mercury one is my fav?Janos Starker.

I'm sounding like a real tea sipper here?I may need to kick my ass before lunch.

oh and cello's are brown, not red. Spread the word.

Peace,
Mike

there's a cello quintet called apocallyptica who use alot of rock/metal ideas in there composition. Zey are from germany, and have a terrible image but there music is certainly worth a listen.
you can buy all the equipment in the world but it won't write the music for you.

Jorane.

Just found out about her. She looks and sounds kinda like Bjork, but she plays the cello and sings in French at the same time. Very cool.

Aren't they the guys that did the metallica covers record? Have to say i found it a little tiresome after a while, one or two tunes was more than enough IMHO.
