Yo La Tengo reccomendations?

Post by honkyjonk » Fri Jan 28, 2005 2:58 pm

Been starting to get into these guys. They're very addictive.
I have Summer Sun, Nothing turned itself inside out, which i both adore, and Heart beating as One, which I'm less into.

Anyway, it appears they have a ton of albums. Or amazon is giving me the t shirt matches too, but I thought I'd ask everyone what they're faves are from this brilliant band. . .

What the eyeball said. I'm liking Today Is The Day more and more.

their christmas song is my favorite "new xmas song" (i.e. xmas song that was written by the band in the here and now and not a cover of a traditional song)

Oh man, great effing band.
I'd probably say Electr-o-Pura is my favorite just because of the guitar parts. Ira is sick on the guitar. If ya ever see 'em live, it's like there's Bill and Ted moments, you know where it's like does he even know what fret he's playing on? - just totally chaotic, and yet there's something kinda beautiful about it. Totally changed the way I play guitar. There's just such a, I dunno, liquid kinda energy to it. It's dreamy and hazy, and yet it totally rocks too. The prominent guitar parts are the one thing I miss on Summer Sun.

I think Hear the Heart is what you're suppose to say is your favorite. I always thought the amount of songs was a little overwhelming, especially by the time you get to "Space Bop" (I think it's called that). Great album though.

I've always been a big champion of And then Nothing. Yeah, I know I said all that stuff about the guitar, but Nothing really just works as an album, IMHO. "Tony Orlando's House" - unbelievable.

I got Today is the Day for Christmas, and man, I think they really coulda made Summer Sun a better album. The alternate vesion of "Today" is just awesome.

They put on an awesome live show too, I might add. Great guitar work. Some instrument switching. Cool covers. They play a pretty long time too. Definitely worth it if you ever get the chance.

Electro-Pura is my favorite by far. "...heart beating..." is a close second, but those guitar parts on E-P are just so hot right now.

I don't know if you can still get it, but there used to be a compilation CD of "New Wave Hot Dogs," "President Yo La Tengo," and the EP with "Asparagus Song" on it--all on one disc. This remains my sentimental fave, though I buy them all. One of the best bands ever!

Sorry, nothing useful to add. But I have to chime with 2 thumbs up for ICHtHBaO. Too many songs?? Well, yeah ok - it is kind of a lot to take in at first. But bugger - for my money it's a good head and shoulders above the others. Spec Beebop, Damage, Autumn Sweater, Shadows (holy shit - this track is fantastic!!!!!!) - so many awesome songs. And sissy hankshaw told me it was done on ADAT!!! What a coup. Unberfuckinleavable. Live they rule too.

Oh wait - did anyone mention the LP Genius + Love = Yo La Tengo yet? 30 tracks of rarities? It's got some great stuff on it - I love the song "Demons" best, I think - it's like a cousin of "Shadows".

I haven't heard that much Yo La Tengo but I really like their cover of William DeVaughn's "Be Thankful For What You've Got" on the Little Honda EP. Makes me feel all warm inside.

If you can find it, their very first recording is so good. The name of it is spanish for "just another band from east LA" and it's them in the 70's doing mexican standards. A very happy and fun sounding record, you can tell they are partying and having a good time making it.
