the other night my lady and i were working our way out of a packed club. the band was playing a reasonably quiet song. when we were precisely right in front of the stage they went into the nice and loud chorus, featuring the drummer wailing on his crash as hard as he could. i didn't have my earplugs in. pure undiluted hell. it was awful. i don't know how anyone can watch shows without plugs in. jeebus.
this is how i know i've damaged my hearing.

provided the drummer is skilled and using nice cymbals, the above situation sounds really good to me.

really? man, i must just be old. the few times at shows where i have to take my earplugs out for whatever reason, i can't believe how horribly painfully bright everything is and put the plugs back in as fast as i can. this is rock shows i'm talking about, if it's a quieter jazz thing or something like that i can deal with it without the plugs in and yeah it does sound nice...

We have one of those in our guest room and I have to unplug it when nobody is staying in there. My wife can't hear it, but I totally can and it drives me crazy.

Yeah, ours is strange, because it has that high-fequency ring only when it's off. So probably not the picture tube but something else. Either way, it's enough to drive me battier than I already am.
