help me figure this out!!!!!!

ok so i bought a soundcraft series 600 a while ago and im getting around to wiring it. im going into a digi 001.
i need to solder 1/4 inch connectors to the ends of the cables, right?
but when i strip the wire i find that theres a ground, and the other two wires are different colours for most of the channels.

ground, hot, and cold. it's balanced, so you'll need TRS connectors. I guess you'll have to figure out which one is hot and which is cold to deside which gets the tip and which gets the sleeve... i'm assuming it's attached to that elco? it's kinda wierd that there isn't a common color to designate which is which.

would i be able to tell if i wired it backwards? like would it be really obvious?

is it just the elco on the other end? i guess you'd either need a pin diagram or bust out the voltmeter and find out where things are coming out where and where they need to be on the desk. i'd probably get a tech to do this stuff, because i'm fully retarded when it comes ot that sort of thing.

but do you think if i wired a trs backwards that i would notice a difference.... so i would know if it was wrong. cause it would be 180 degrees out of phase right? so would i notice and i could just use trial and error?

I wish I could help more. I am assuming these are balanced I/O, which the 001 supports. I would guess the thing to do is check for continuity between the ground and the pins. If one of them shorts, that's the sleeve, the other is the pin, and I wouldn't ground the sheild at both ends.

ok, that's another idea, see if you can figure out where all the wires are comeing from on the other end? you've probably tried that.

checking for phasing, it seems like when you puff a microphone, the signal starts off going upwards on the wave form view.

you need a wiring diagram from soundcraft or you need to find a tech that KNOWS soundcraft consoles. There is really no definitive "standard" for wiring an Elco. Yes, there are some common ways to pin them, but elcos are shipped without the pins installed, so you could put whatever you want wherever you want in the connector so its not good to assume any pattern with them. If you wire your connectors wrong, so long as you have the shield to the sleeve, your connection will be out of phase. You can buy a phase clicker, but they are kinda costly. IF you open the console, of course you can look at the back of the elco and trace it back and figure out the pattern. Its something that someone out there should know, you just have to find the person that knows it...

Make up a little test connector with the TRS plug and alligator clips so you can try different combinations of wires.

Then send a sawtooth wave through the console - with a sawtooth wave you can tell polarity. Get the waveform up on your screen through the recording software, or an oscilloscope if you've got one, and futz around with the alligator clips until you have the right polarity.

edit: or use a drum machine, sending a stream of kick drum hits. Something that has a definite direction on the waveform.
