Sorry wing, but m-w sucks

Post by Mr. Dipity » Wed Feb 09, 2005 10:13 pm

I've been trying it all day, and the number of words in their thesaurus is pitiful. pitiful!

I'm going back to dictionary dot com.

doesn't dictionary.com get their content from mirriam webster (the dictionary) anyway?

if you have a verbose vocabulary, you should have no problem finding the right words. have fun with your dictionary of suck!

If that was the case, why is their thesaurus so much bigger?

OKAY, so I was just saying that. Dictionary.com actually has the distinct feature of gathering results from several different sources, the main one being the American Heritage Dictionary, but it is not limited to that. So sure, it has M-W beat on that. But who needs that crap when you have all that you need anyway on M-W?

I'll just ask this: is a big thesaurus really necessary if you already know how to talk? Or do you just like things to be big so that you might be able to better inflate your ego in all this talk of things being BIG? Does everything really have to big to you, mister? Well I'll tell you something: big things can come in small packages. That's right, you heard me. I may be small, but I don't need a big thesaurus to prove what a big man I really am. Actions speak louder than words, afterall... so you may have all the words possible to choose from in the world, but how big are you really in the end if you haven't the actions to back them up?

Thank you.

Words are symbols. They are the paths toward your state of mind which is in itself an act of being...a process of becoming. Words allude to this.

Hence TapeOp...Aum

Words are all a figment of imagination!

But again, the imagination is itself an action. Perhaps the ultimate action?

The face, its emotions, the television, all are symbol. How do you interpret what is real and what is imaginary? Specific word choices matter, but you are right, Wing, intention is everything...

Words are powerless without the people that use them!

This is a damn nerdy bunch to argue the merits of two dictionary sites.

My wife is attemtping to start law school so hopefully we'll have the OED online again soon, otherwise. m-w rocks! Simple and elegant, at least until the wizards over at google decide to do it.

Oh yeah. I should set up a browser link to proxy to my wife's school library. We have OED too. It rulez0rs.

Can't stand no M-W, though. How can you stand to look at that page? It looks like a porn page.

Dictionary.com's page is so much more soothing to the eye. ...and it loads faster.

is it the way it has way more advertisements, poorly chosen type, text that overruns and is not formatted well? all soothing things, I must say!
