Exciting Portland Bands?
Exciting Portland Bands?
Hello,
I wan't to do a profile on Portland based bands and groups. I want a lot of diveristy within the profile, not just indie rock.
1) Who are some of the more exciting acts in Portland?
2) Do you feel that there is a scene in anyone direction/genre?
I'm not totally hip to what's going on over there, but it seems that the lack of a scene seems to be the strength. Of all the stuff I rerally enjoy that is coming from Portland, few of it seems to be related at all.
Gimmie your dime, I'll give ya five cents change!

i heard a cd by this band garmon bozia or something like that, it was the most amazing music i've heard out of portland. the played a couple times at a club that my friend was working at and he got a CDR off them. then they dissappeared. but track them down, it's amazing stuff.

Re: Exciting Portland Bands?
my girlfriend's brother who used to live in the land of port had a CD from a band called Nice Nice that's really cool. It's super-processed guitar and a drummer. I'm not sure if they're still around, but it's great stuff.

Re: Exciting Portland Bands?
Holy moly there are so many good bands in Portland right now it's not even funny. Look at the stuff coming from Adam Selzer and the Type Foundry studio- Norfolk & Western, Decemberists, the Graves, so on. There's a band called Pangs that's about to put out a great album that's really melodic and energetic in a GBV kind of way with a bit more new-wavishness. There's also Bobby Birdman (laptop pop and piano balladry), Thanksgiving (young folksinger), and Rob Walmart (casio). I'm probably forgetting a bunch.
Adam also did a sweeeeeat harmonica solo for my band's next album. He totally soloed over a dimished F# chord.

Check out Jackie-O Motherfucker and Rollerball (if they're still based out of Portland). Good stuff.

Re: Exciting Portland Bands?
Buttfrenchers is just so wrong!!! OK so what do I know?
Did anybody see the Menomena show at Berbati's last weekend? Who opened for them? Whoever it was they were awesome, three keys, bass, drums and vox.
This may be really random but I liked Hotboxed when I saw them battle it out at the Roseland Grill. Pretty heavy and lots of screaming but very genuine.

They are no longer together, but I have always hoped for a "thirty ought six" revival, I don't even know if you can get thier stuff anywhere anymore!
