New York City:

1) WFMU
2) er, WFMU
3) obvious...

WFMU = free-form radio, each DJ plays what he/she wants to... so, every hour or so it's completely different music.
found this station on the internet a while back it is good. you can type in an artist you know of and there site will give all the archived sets it was played in .

Their archives are incredible - especially if I'm out on the road and hear something... it means I can hear it again as long as I remember about what time it played.

However, the archives have given them some trouble with the FCC, I think.

In the NY/NJ area, WKCR (Columbia University) is also really good. WFUV is good, too. Farleigh-Dickinson University's station is sometimes cool.

I just plain refuse to listen to commercial radio. I'd rather listen to static (or, some post-modern electro-acoustic work that sounds like static) than listen to advertisements.

Denver/Boulder

KGNU 88.5 Freeform music, non-corporate news
KVCU 1190 AM U of Colo student run, great variety of new stuff
KUVO public Jazz/Latin occasionally plays cool stuff

The rest are mostly Clear Channel/Jacor/Jefferson Pilot and play lotsa commercials. Yesterdays FCC ruling ain't gonna help that trend, either. Give community/public radio your $.
