How you know when you're reading a great audio magazine

Sometimes I'll be reading Mix or EQ magazine, and I don't really get too much out of the issue, but whenever I pick up a copy of TapeOp, I'm always inspired to do some recording. To me that's a sure sign of a great audio magazine.

Yup, as opposed to feeling like you just need to go buy a bunch of pretty gear, because it all looks so good in those glossy ads, and seems to get such great reviews.

Or as opposed to feeling like you should quit because your control room doesn't look like the one on the cover.

Or as opposed to feeling like every article is on "getting great guitar tones in a small space," and says the exact same thing every month!

Yeah, TapeOp is just a BIT different than that!

You guys are nuts. A good recording magazine should inspire you to spend tons of money on gear.

ummmm... that would be me!

there are a few things that I'd like to try out.
but, for the most part these days, I just buy what I need, if I need anything. And, I'm not talking about NEED the way most gear addicts do.

I'm so over gear lust.

And, looking back, I'm kinda embarrassed that I ever fell into that trap!

Now, I cringe when I HAVE TO buy something for a session!

what's funny is that when I still had my day job, I thought that I needed this and that gear to make my recordings better. Now, I realize that there are plenty of free, or inexpensive ways to make my recordings better. And, now that I'm making my living from it, I realize that I can make plenty of money with what I have. I'll leave the $500g consoles to the studios who have to charge $2000 a day to justify the expense.

Honestly, some of the higher end stuff that I used to think that I really NEEDED (2" tape deck, big automated console, Pro Tools, etc...) now seems like such a pain in the ass that it's not worth it anyway!

There are several levels in this business. I'm happy and able to make a fine living at the level that I'm at.

Now, that doesn't mean that I don't secretly hope to someday be working with all of my favorite bands!! I just hope that they come to me for what I capture, rather than what I own.

It would also be me. In fact, the very last thing I ever want to do is spend a ton on of dough on gear. Trust me.

don't get me wrong, i don't spend a ton of dough on gear either, but if i had the resources i probably would. that is, as long as it doesn't get in the way of my life, making music, etc. anyway, reading tapeop every month (and reading this forum) always gets me wondering about various recording devices, mics, cool consoles(!), studers, modular synths, better cabling, op amps, summing amps, you name it..

i'm not talking about irresponsibly spending a ton of dough on gear. i think some of you misinterpret my statement as being wreckless. if money were no object, would you then?
