new bands to listen to
ok basically i've kind of always been really really dissapointed with most of the main stream band stuff after the early 90's. SO for some reason to me the growth rate for GOOD bands just went down, while the growth rate for bands in general went up. what the hell is happening. so what happened is i went back to the classics and then i explored electronic, and then 70's and then i hit the cenematic sound track stuff, classical, etc... and so i guess the question is what are some really great bands that have come out that have some great songs that are new and fresh and actually good. i have tons of cds, and it's sad but true but i would like to find some new shit. i mean there are only sooo many times you can watch the same movie over and over again no matter how good it is or how origional it is. class movies never go away but you can't watch them everyday, and so with music there are gonna be classics that won't go away, but again i'm looking for something new and fresh that is just awesome. someone earlier posted a message about OF montreal and so i checked it out and i really like em. they sound awesome. it's got that 70s thing going on but it's different and it's kind of crazy and groovy.
if you want to go crazy with this thread go ahead. i'll check out all of it.

Most of the stuff I've discovered lately, I've discovered from working at a local club running sound. Some of the touring (i.e. not just all of my friends' local bands) bands that I've enjoyed mixing the most are:
Cordero - roca independiente
The Malarkies - gorgeous Neil Young-ish music from a 2 piece
Dirty Tricks - kick ass Canadian rock, eh!
Coachwhips - wild, wild show! good fun! they never play where they're supposed to (stage)
John Wilkes Booze - indie soul!
Shuttlecock - 2 piece.. drummer with a shitload of pads and triggers in addition to his regular kit. guitar player playing bass with moog taurus foot synth. crazy shit!
Grand Buffet - viciously independent hiphop! hillarious and hardcore political at the same time. made me believe in hip hop again!

Re: new bands to listen to
I heard the "Franz Ferdinand" album and thought it was pretty good.
Here in LA there are a couple of local bands who I think are pretty great (and I'm not plugging my band here) and fresh sounding (fressshhhhh):
The Moving Units

Kennedy

Circus Minor

Re: new bands to listen to
Now It's Overhead just put out a second album, and it's as good as the first.
The Album Leaf (reviewed in the new Tape Op) is also a good listen.

Re: new bands to listen to
2 bands that I can think of now that really blew my goddamn mind the past few years have to be:
Melt Banana - Japan
Deerhoof - San Francisco
Live? even better. catch them when you can... IF you can
Oh there's so much more amazing stuff out there as well - cant think of any that have changed my life lately - but then again - i've been in an ongoing Bowie/Neil Young phase lately so what do I know!
P.S. http://pitchforkmedia.com is a great resource
enjoy
