HD24 soft clip?
The longer I own my HD24, the more I send it into the red when tracking. Last night I got really out of hand and cranked everything as hot as I could; my meters were maxed out throughout the song. No distortion at all. What the hell? A digital recorder that doesn't give that hideous digital distortion sound?
Anybody else notice this? Or am I just high?

Re: HD24 soft clip?
That's interesting. Mine doesn't do that; or at least I think it doesn't. I've had signals clip on the HD24 and I got that "pop" sound. I've never tried to push it to the max yet, but now I probably will for curiosity's sake.
Re: HD24 soft clip?
you're eventually going to ruin a good take that way.
It's best not to send a digital record way into the red.
While there is some headroom up there , You're in for a big clip eventually.
You also may not notice some crackling that will show up later with headphones or different monitors.

There's definitely some crackle going on, but that's a sound I kind of like. In fact, I get even more crackle when I mix because I run that thing into the red, too.

Great, now you're all set to master the average major label rock record!abrawner wrote:There's definitely some crackle going on, but that's a sound I kind of like. In fact, I get even more crackle when I mix because I run that thing into the red, too.
Dynamics are for pansies anyway.

Although, when I brought the song into Peak, the waveform really was maxed out throughout the song.
Good times.

Seems to me that the HD24 is very forgiving when you stray into the red. Bless its heart!

Come to think of it, that is why I posted this in the first place. I wondered how in the hell I got a digital recorder with the heart of a tape machine. Pretty cool.joelpatterson wrote:Seems to me that the HD24 is very forgiving when you stray into the red. Bless its heart!

My aging Fostex D-80's do not forgive any creep into the red. Nasty crackle everytime.
