de-esser units?

does anybody make a stand alone de-esser? Or is there a good de-esser out there with out a lot of the other stuff attached (eg. comp, eq, etc.)?

What's your set-up like? If you're running a DAW, I'd strong urge using a de-esser plugin. Two things that have gotten much cleaner and more precise in the digital domain are de-essers and gates. The Waves bundle has an excellant de-esser with their gold package.

The 263 is about as kick ass as it gets for anywhere near cheap. It works great and is fast and easy to set up. (Much cooler than that Drawmer MX-series box.) On the other end of the scale, the BSS units are great, as is the Urei LA-22, although I generally like the Urei a little better on low-frequency compression duties.

I would have to agree with Jeff, the Waves De-esser is kick ass. I use it all the time. It's probably the only Waves plugin that I use everyday. Orban also makes a de-esser (hardware, rackmount) that was pretty much a staple in every studio in the 80's. It's one rack space and baby fuckin' blue. It does the job and you can probably find one cheap.

What we really need is a De-R-er, so we can get rid of the yarling. But that's just me.

by the way, i'm running out of a 24 channel Soundcraft board into a Alesis HD24. Some digital, some analog, just not any computer/DAW stuff yet.

Best de-esser I've ever heard was the Weiss DS-1 - but that will run you some serious bank. But if you want a free de-essing plugin for PC that works just as well the pricy Waves one - check out Spitfish - part of the "Fish Fillets" VST dynamics plugin suite:
