Alesis 3630 compressor
I've been wanting to get a good compressor for quite a while now, and just realized that I did have one of these in my rack. Anybody know anything about them. Are they worth much for resale? Do they sound decent? I've been using compressors in the box, but was thinking that this could help vocals when tracking.

With the Black Lion mod they are real nice. Without it, they stink.

Re: Alesis 3630 compressor
Some people like them, others don't. I've heard the mod is nice but I haven't heard one that's been tricked out. If you're lucky (really lucky) you might be able to sell it for $50. Personally I don't like the 3630 and haven't found anything it's good for but like I said that's my opinion. I bought one when they first came out (before I knew anything about compression) and it wasn't a very good introduction to compression, it just confused me even more. Some say it works well for a bass guitar.
Do a test with vocals and see if you like it. A/B it to what you already use, you never know...it might be useful to you. I do think there are better compressors within the same price range (more versatile and characteristic). I'm sure other people here will have suggestions if you decide to look for something else. It seems people like the RNC stuff.
Good luck,

ditto - I sold one of mine to a bass player for about $80, he loves it.AnalogElectric wrote: Some say it works well for a bass guitar.
not bad, since I bought it around '97 for about $100.

I think it sucks all the way around. It sounds pinched and noisy.

Re: Alesis 3630 compressor
I had one for a while and I didn't like it either, however, at that time I hated compression in general, so I was a bit biased. I sold it and got my money back though. If I bought another one, I wouldn't pay over $50 for it.

Re: Alesis 3630 compressor
there's really only 2 things that i would expect it to do; compress and gate. it's not really successful with either of these......2 have 2 of the units at one of the clubs where i do sound and they're pretty much useless. not to mention that 1 channel of one of the unit stopped working about 1 month into having them. i've heard that the mod makes them nicer, but think about it.....once you pay 100 for the unit and then 115-165 for the mod, why not just get one ebay and buy a dbx1066....those things are everything that the 3630 WANTS to be...or hell, you could even buy a PAIR of dbx 166 for the same price.....yep, that's right, 4 channels of dbx compression/limiting/gating for the price of 2 channels of crappy, alesis "kind-of-not-really-working-but-maybe-kind-of-nice-if-someone-modifies-it" compression....
...just remember, when doing live sound: you can't polish a turd....

You would pay that much for the mod because (IMO) it blows the 1066 and the 166 out of the water...there's NO contest.i've heard that the mod makes them nicer, but think about it.....once you pay 100 for the unit and then 115-165 for the mod, why not just get one ebay and buy a dbx1066....those things are everything that the 3630 WANTS to be...or hell, you could even buy a PAIR of dbx 166 for the same price.....
But then again, I'm biased...

Re: Alesis 3630 compressor
Plus I already have the 3630 so I wouldn't have to go out and buy one. I'll i'd spend would be the 115 for the mod kit. Anybody A/B the modded 3630 with the 166 or the RNC?

You may want to check your rack more often.yardleyone wrote:I've been wanting to get a good compressor for quite a while now, and just realized that I did have one of these in my rack..

Re: Alesis 3630 compressor
I would look at a Behringer Composer which is nice for around $90. I don`t ever endorse Behringer because they rip off designs of other companies but it did serve me well for a while.
If you want to splurge for $350 the ART PRO VLA is very nice and the REAL NICE COMPRESSOR is a steal at $250.

I have one stock. I love it. I'm in the minority. They have virtually no resale value at all.
