mackie vlz pro vs plain old

Post by bantam » Fri Aug 06, 2004 10:45 pm

Does anyone know if there is that much of a difference in the quality of the mic pres between the regular say ms1202 and the 1202 vlz pro? Does anyone like the sound of the older models?
thanks

I can't compare, or claim to be a pro, but I find the old-school 1202 very useable for guitar, percussion, backing vocals, etc.

i've used both from time to time but never side to side. they always sound like mackie pres to me...which means they're ok.

I liked the VLZ much less than the originals, and the VLZ Pro better than the VLZ - but never really formed an opinion beyond that.

For all the talk about Mackies sucking, I recorded a bunch of stuff through a VLZ (not pro), and haven't heard a single complaint about the sound quality.

I did, however, bypass the mix circuitry by using the sends on the insert channels to my hard disc.

I've also since upgraded to nice pers and can hear the difference. But you can do a lot of good music with VLZs or other Mackie pres.

thanks everyone,
as a sanity check heres what ive done to try to capture a good drum sound...

sold all by behringer stuff out of frustration

aphex 207 for kick(sm57) and snare(beta 52)
tape op mics for overhead that i will probably go into the ms1202 and come out the aux channels to bypass the eq...

having 4 pres in the mackie will let me set up tom mics. is there anything other than 57s that would capture toms inexpensivly? all my money went into the 207!!

thanks guys...

this hobby is becoming a dissorder. :)

i think 57's rule on toms...you could do a lot worse...i just used one on rack the last couple days...no complaints.
