Re: Beer Suggestions
There are actually several excellent breweries in NC. Some of my favorite beers are actualy from my home state!
My recent favorite is the Cottonwood Brewery Almond Stout. I've not been able to find it bottles yet and they might only brew it for draft sale right now. It's a very rich and full-bodied beer, with a slightly sweet aftertaste. It's not as heavy or coffee-like as other stouts and the almond taste is pretty subtle at first. This is a really, really good beer. Cottonwood also makes a very popular beer around here callled Low-Down Brown, that's quite good as well.
The Weeping Radish Brewery makes a terrific variety of beers that should be appealing to peopel with a variety of tastes. For the mild beer drinkers, they have a blonde that's really good. Of my favorites, they make a Heffeweissen that's out of this world and a dark lager that's quite good, too.
The Highlands Gaelic Ale is also a great beer.
If you've never had any of the Abita beers from New Orleans, you're really missing out. My favorite Abita is called Turbo Dog. It's all I drank at the TapeOp Convention.
Probably my favorite currently-manufactured beer (well, maybe second favorite since I found that Almond Stout) is Fuller's ESB. It's a really strong beer in its ability to mess you up! It tastes really, really great. Very rich and full of flavor. A little smoother and more pleasant than most other ESBs I've had, especially ESBs brewed in the States.
And if you can find a bottle of Monty Python's Holy Ale, it's actually really good stuff!
Other great beers include Samuel Smith's Nut Brown, Samuel Adam's Seasonal Pumpkin Ale, and the Boston Beer Works' Heffeweissen and Red.
Other great beers no longer with us include Blue Ridge Lager and the Saranac Winter Brew from 1995.

I second the vote for Weeping Radish, Chris. Their blonde kicks arse. And their heffeweisen is awesome with a slice of lemon. Awesome. That stuff is brewed on The Outer Banks, right?
St. George's, a local brewery, has a tasty, super duper hoppy IPA. I can't drink it very often, though, as strong IPAs tend to give me nasty headaches, even in moderation.

Re: Beer Suggestions
I've been digging the Belgians lately:
Orval- great great beer.
St. Bernardus Tripel and Prior 8 are really good too.
Bell's Amber Ale rocks.
Budweiser in a frozen mug on a hot day cannot be beat.

don't forget to be generally physically unactive so you can put man-breasts upon your beer-belly.

Re: Beer Suggestions
Abita...good stuff, especially Purple Haze. Pilsner Urquell...that's the best stuff you can get nationally. If you're in northern New England (Boston and up), check out Smuttynose Brewery's Old Brown Dog Ale - it's Newcastle, improved.
Re: Beer Suggestions
oh boy, you guys like some good beer.
dogfish head, anything they make, but particularly the 60 minute IPA
geary's pale definitely rocks
did sam adams really get bought by bud? bummer. it's still the one reliably good choice in a lot of places. like airports.

Blanche de Chambly. Had it in Montreal this summer. Sweetest beer ever, but super heavy on the alcohol content. One of them started to mess me up.
Re: Beer Suggestions
Yeah, but it happened years ago. The "regular" Sam Adams doesn't seem to have suffered much, but the specialty beers went down the crapper. You're right about the airport thing, too- no matter how shitty the airport (Saint Louis, anyone?), you can usually pick up a sammy.jajjguy wrote:did sam adams really get bought by bud? bummer. it's still the one reliably good choice in a lot of places. like airports.
Steve Albini used to like it
