New Donovan record!!!
New Donovan record!!!
Hey his new one is pretty awesome if you havn't heard it.
I've only listened to it a couple of times, but I'd say it's probably one of the 2 or 3 best things he's ever released. And one of my favorite records I've heard in the last year or so.
Damn, I thought the guy had vanished, and wammo.
Upright bass is all over it and it sounds really really really really good. Danny Thompson.
A great batch of songs too. You probably know most of the musicians on there. They're all very talented, but it's just really cool material.
That is, if you like Donovan. He kind of seems like a love or hate type of artist.
I love him because he's always walking a line between outrageousley fruitcakey, and brillantly cool.

I'll have to check it out. I think I heard one or two of the new cuts recently somewhere. Thanks for the heads up.

Yeah, I've been playing it on my radio show. A big surprise. I have Sutras, but it didn't jump out like this one. Sunshine Superman and Mellow Yellow are two of my all time faves. Been listening to them non stop since they came out. The world needs more harpsichord.

He was interviewed on NPR Monday, on Fresh Air. I'm planning on picking up the album because I was very impressed with his music and playing. He seems pretty weird, though. Now I understand the the musical score from movie Brother Sun, Sister Moon a little better.

Re: New Donovan record!!!
Donovan came out to our island back in '96 and did a beautiful concert of mostly the Sutras material, but also a healthy dose of the old stuff...
I asked if he could do Barabajagal with just solo guitar, and he just nailed it...
He let me record the show on a DA88, and it's a real fun listen. His introduction to "Hurdy Gurdy Man" is just priceless...
"I was sitting on the Ganges with one Beach Boy and 2 Beatles...."
He's a total class act and a gentleman offstage as well...
Glad to hear his new CD is a good one...
He deserves it...

Yeah,
I heard some of that NPR show too. I was cracking up at what a kindly and proper, and eloquent speaking gentleman he is. Like a cross between Michael Caine and the Masterpiece Theater host.
Also, I didn't realize that Sunshine Superman came out a year and a half before Sgt. Pepper.
Zow!!! I don't know where that puts it in regard to Pet Sounds and Revolver, but damn, it's still an impressively experimental album for so early on.
Of course it was probably after Bringing it All Back Home/Highway 61/Blonde on Blonde.
I forgot about that trilogy. Geeze, fucking Dylan.
That's a different school, I guess though.

Or Jeff Beck on "Barabajagal"...
He also plays on a Donovan tune called "Homesickness", which I think (?) remains unreleased...

Re: New Donovan record!!!
I met Donovan during the Sutra period. I went to my local Borders to buy the sound bible The Yamaha Book of Sound Reinforcement. When i got there I realized that Donovan was doing an instore performance and autograph session!
People had all sorts of stuff for him to sign.
Some dude brought a baseball! People were telling him THEIR stories and more or less talking his ear off. But he was gracious and mellow the whole time listening fully and not showing the slightest sign of boredom or irritation.
When it was my turn in line I told him I wanted to be an engineer. The only thing I had for him to sign was my brand new copy of the Yamaha book but I fugured that it would be a blessing on my sound education to have him sign it.
He recommended that I should learn to record acoustic instruments. He said that if I could master that everything else would fall into place. Thanks Donovan!
