is this possible? i like the simplicity and sound of cassette but would like to use my own preamp/mixer instead of the shi**y ones built into the typical tascam/fostex/yamaha etc. is there something out there for me? (also a more robust cassette mechanism that doesn't slow down or speed up would be nice too.)
thanks!
multi track cassette recorder using my own preamp/mixer... ?

tascam has the 238- 8 track cassette rackmount, and the 234 4 track cassette rackmount.

The 238 (and particularly the 238s with Dolby S instead of dbx noise reduction) is fantastic. Easy to find on EBay for under $300.

Actually, the 238 with a humble Mackie 1202 is quite a nice guerilla setup. Even though I have upgraded, I still have and use the setup when I have to document quick music ideas since I'm so used to it.

i used to use a tascam 244 with a mackie 1202 for preamps and mixing. I recorded in through the effects returns on the 244, and mixed out from the tape direct outs. Huge improvement over using the built-in preamps and mixer.
