Any Happy users? Cheap and Degraded Gear Post

Post by texlop » Sat Oct 16, 2004 12:23 am

Just post gear your Happy about using that isn't sought after or others hate just because everyone else hates it. Behringer and cheap gear are good examples, I guess. Give thougts on any Pro Audio gear: Mics, Speaker, Mixers, Rack Units, etc...

Go on, post.

I'm going to give this thread a twist by telling you what gear I've used that is fairly widely dismissed and yet which I have managed to adapt in ways other than which it was intended and, consequently, got some results I'm really surprised and pleased with. And that was the Line 6 POD. This thing is so bad for big distorted guitar sounds, imo (which is probably a big part of what it was designed for) but bloody hell. If you try running anything other than guitars through it, it can be a ace. Having said that, I do actually like it for some semi-clean giutar stuff too.

I've found the Aphex 107 to be a quite decent pre. There's actually an old Mix in which Stepen Paul says that too.

another vote for the 3630 --- I don't understand why everyone hates this compressor so much.

Also, I LOVE the little DBX 163x half rack compressors. I don't know if people dis these or not, but they are way underrated IMO.

Yamaha EMT-10 midi module. Cheese city, but the piano sounds great in a mix.

Alesis nanocompressor. Crush those drum machines?

EV 635A mic. Sounds good on my voice...

AKG C1000. Use 1 as a drum overhead its great - use 2, its sounds horrible.

Valley people 440 (I love this compressor)

Sony DPS-V77 (a little bright sounding, but good)

Sony MUR201 (favorite reverb for vocals)

Sequential Circuits Six-Trak (only in unison mode, great bass)

Behringer ADA8000 (really isn't too bad)

Wein Bridge EQ modules from a Sony MXP-3000 console (These sound similar to the JH500 EQs)

I'm a big fan of those $40 omnis that Behringer makes, ECM8000. And the MCA SP-1 is another $40 mic I sometimes dig. Also, I really like mixing in the box (PT LE 6.4) these days and that's something most here are against, right?

Alesis Midiverb 4 - as long as you ignore the presets and program your own, it can sound quite decent.

Boss GT4 multi-effects pedal - same as the MV4. The presets make me wanna puke, but you can get some good sounds out of it.

Alesis Microlimiter - it just makes things sound so... messed up.

Mackie mic preamps in a 1202vlz- they can make a kick drum sound very in-your-face slappy. Anything I want to sound uptight goes through those.
not to worry, just keep tracking....

You see that wasn't too bad now was it. Don't you feel good about yourself. I now know not to be bummed if I ever decide to use a Line 6 POD, because I now know it has a million other uses. Now lets all gather in a circle close our eyes and breath. Take away all the negative vibes and let the good vibes come in. Breath in and out, in and out. Aahh.

i had a zoom studio 1204 p.o.s. rackmount multi fx that i used to get some awesome delays, flanging and wierd doubling stuff... particularly good for electronic stuff.... but it died in the flood. so no i have to find a new shitty fx box for mangling synths with. actually, the reverbs in it were really cool... really impressionistic washes of sound.
