RPGs and Recording

Does anyone on this board have RPGs in their past or present?
Ren Fair, SCA etc. count too.

There seems to be a strong correlation between
RPG participation in youth, and geeky/technical careers and pastimes
in adult life. I was wondering if that carries over into recording.

Bonus experience points if you have integrated RPGs into your recording
activities or vice-versa. ;-)

What is an RPG? I seriously thought that you were asking about recording rocket-propelled grenades! Now I feel out of the loop, so tell!

No. I *DID* listen to a lot of Rush and Yes as a kid, though.
I have some close friends who are huge into gaming, and my sister and her husband are huge Ren Fair types, but it skipped right past me.

I dabbled with D&D in junior high, then i moved on to the guitar.

alright, alright.. i played magic the gathering in junior high and stuff. then i started running live sound for friends and churches and stuff, and playing in a band or two. the saga continues.

I played D&D and some of the other games (Top Secret, anyone?) in grade school & junior high, as well as old-school pencil and paper wargames like Squad Leader and Third Reich. By high school I'd started playing guitar and pretty much left the role-playing games in the dust (although I still played Squad Leader from time to time). I still play wargames on the computer, though.

Wow, I just realized what a total geek I am.

I thought you meant "reflection phase grating." I guess that makes me more of a geek than the D&D guys. Actually I did play D&D a bit as a teen. Yup.

hahahahahah i had the same thought chris when i read the subject.

only RPG i ever played was Gamma World.
mostly it was in 1994 (i was 24 at the time and thus a latecomer).
we'd order Chinese delivery and i'd pass out from the MSG before the game was halfway over.

A quicl lesson in High School heiarchy...

Never played D & D as that was for the dorks and nerds.

I was a band fag, we were cool...

The jocks and popular people were to shallow for us...They didn't appreciate classical music, worried too much about apearance and labels.

The stoners were cool because some of the band fags were stoners and we all liked music.

Everyone stayed away from the shit kickers and goat ropers.

in "high school" i was a musician (guitar, bass, violin, singer, etc.).
sadly, my academic performance was too erratic to be allowed to stay in band.
i was also in the poetry and drama clubs AND took 2 or 3 different art classes in the same year. dunno how i managed that last bit.
most of my friends then were stoners and/or dealers and are now mostly dead, burned-out or in jail.

speaking of ropers, i'm about to record a 2 song demo for a local country singer/songwriter/performer. he's bartering for the time by taking out an old retaining wall on my property and regrading the area so it slopes gently to the nearest fence line.

thankfully, this guy can sing quite well and writes good songs.
i mean, i like the songs and i'm not into country music!

anyone have insights on how a country recording session should differ from rock or folk session?

I played D&D a couple of times in college. When my friends and I formed Toxic Bag Productions a few years back to make sound effect CDs for Role-players, I played a bunch of Call of Chthulhu so I'd kinda know what I was talking about (they were the gamers, I was the audio guy). I can talk a pretty good game at the Toxic Bag booth, but my partners and friends in the industry still have to save me from 'outing' myself as a non-gamer at conventions from time to time (though it's now been two years since we worked a 'con).

I was a sci-fi geek in High School (as well as a band fag, but I was primarily in Jazz Band, not marching band until senior year, so I was kinda on the fringe of the Band thing) but fantasy (D&D, Lord of the Rings) never did much for me.

My brother was the Ren Faire geek--he majored in theatre and spent 6 summers as a performer at the Faire in Wisconsin.

I was always a scout (free spaceship!) until somebody bought Mercenary, and I could be a special forces guy.

My friend Larry had the original "white box" D&D, which we played until the "AD&D" books came out. Played Gamma World, too.

I feel like a total dork now. I have a hard time picturing a young Glyn Johns saying "I draw my bastard sword and attack the kobold holding the crossbow!"

I played D&D (well, "Palladium Fantasy RPG") on Friday night with some guys from the football team and then we'd go play pick-up football on Saturday mornings. Good times.

I'm also PLANNING to integrate recording and music in a project somewhat similar to dwlb's Toxic Bag. Someday.

One of my friends is currently gathering people for some old-skool first edition action, but he's a hipster so now it's all retro and cool...

EDIT - I also once, by special request, put someone's gag poem about D&D to music and recorded it. My first recording project, in fact. It is now lost to the sands of time and as far as I'm concerned it can stay there...
