first post, and a song of mine

Post by julia » Tue Oct 26, 2004 7:39 pm

hello! this is my first post here, so i guess i'd start with one of my own music.

this is a song i made this weekend:

parallel lines are bad

the instruments used in this are a cheap acoustic guitar, washburn bass, electra phoenix electric guitar, recorder, tote-a-tune keyboard, yamaha psr-248 keyboard, flute, and a screwdriver hit against aluminum for the beat. it was mostly recorded with a cheap microphone from best buy, but some vocals (like the middle section with my boyfriend) were recorded using a rode (?) nt-1.

recorded and mixed onto protools ! any feedback is greatly appreciated.

Sounds like fun stuff. I enjoy the aluminum percussion. Looking forward to to more stuff.

i liked it, you found a good sound. the backwards stuff was used to great effect. cool title, too. creativity + minimal equipment = awesome.
medicate? oh, i thought you said "meditate."

I love it!!

Do you have a web site so we can hear more? That's totally cool and interesting, and beautiful at the same time.

This is very interesting and well done--I would listen to this. On the critical side (and take it with a grain of salt as it's from a singer) the male vocals sound a little weak--I'm talking about the pitch being off on the held notes, doesn't sound like a practiced singer, and the ssss sounds are a little wimpy/squeeky. The female is really good. It's just a matter of presentation, which is totally subject to the genre you want to appeal to--so the way a more proper singer might appraoch it could sound awful and too planned. I'd like to hear more of this--really creative and well carried-out.

I'd like to hear it mapped to a MIDI beat map...I agree that it's pretty sweet!

oh gosh i forgot about this thread! hehe.

thank you all for your kind comments about the song!!

logan- is the only critical side one with the vocals? at least, if that is the biggest problem, then i am alright with that! i don't add vocals too often to my music, and this is the only song of mine that includes a male voice. and as for the female voice, i'm glad you think my singing is bearable, haha :p neither of us are really practiced singers, but we do what we can!

walnut- i'm not sure what you mean with the midi beat map.. program a midi beat to it? or have it all played in midi?

thanks once again! i'll be sure to post once i have a new song completed. i'm getting a cello soon, so i'm going to have fun incorporating it into the songs!

Except you'd never find out because the only time you care to know what artist some awesome song is by they always play 7 more songs and cut to commercial without saying who they were. Radio stinks.

Hey! That's my voice you're talking about, jerk! Just kidding, it's ok. I didn't spend as much time getting it right as I could have. It was pretty spur of the moment. I came up with a melodic line and some lyrics, belted out a couple takes, and then Julia doubled up. I'm by no means a trained vocalist, heh heh.
