MXL mic comments?
MXL mic comments?
I've come upon an opportunity to buy some MXL mics at a significant savings and was wondering if I could get some $.02 from users who've worked with them before. Worth the money?
I'm looking to get a starter set of drum tracking mics. I have none right now. My budget is pretty small.
I'm looking at the pair of the 2001's and the 603's. Wondering about using the 2001's as stereo overheads, and two 603's as kick and room. Any comments on these?
And how would the 603's work as vocal or acoustic guitar mics?

Re: MXL mic comments?
I would use the 603s (small diapraghm mics) as overheads and the 2001s for kick and room. An excellent engineer here in town named Jamie Hoover uses the 603s for snare and hi hat and the 2001 for kick and he gets great drum sounds. (I'm pretty sure that has more to do with Jamie than the mics he's got, but these are what he uses.) I've heard the 603s on acoustic guitar and they work fairly well, as do the 2001 for certain vocalists.
I personally am pretty crazy about the Oktava stuff that I've used (and own), but if you're getting a good deal on the MXLs, go for it.

The 603's make great OH/Room mics. I bought two pairs and they are pretty handy. I wouldn't use one in kick though(might blow it up). The 2001's are OK, but I sold mine and bought a 421 for kick. Hope this helps.

Re: MXL mic comments?
Im going to be buying a 2001 for vocals, and the primary vocalist Im recording with has a voice thats pretty rich in the lower frequencies... good combo or no?
Re: MXL mic comments?
I've got a pair of the 603s. I think they're pretty much the universal "starter set" for overheads. I've used them on acoustic (although I prefer my Oktava 219), and they're great for hand percusion as well.
They're probably already a pretty sweet deal at their list price, so if you're getting a "good deal" I say go for it. Although, looking back, if I could do it again, I might go for the Oktava 012s.

I like the 603 on hi hat and acoustic guitar. I have not tried a pair for overheads yet. I have the 2001 and did the tapeop/royer tube mod. It rocks. Overall I think that the 603's are a great value.

Sounds like the consensus is that the 603 could do a great job as drum overheads.
Any of the MXL mics work well for toms or kick drum?

I love the 2001 for kick. You can also get the David Royer mod and turn these into some damn fine tube mics.

Re: MXL mic comments?
the 2001's can be pretty grainy in the top end, and it definitely limits their usefullness for me. but i was working on a project and this guy had not the greatest acoustic guitar in the world and we tried a bunch of mics but kept coming back to that one. that graininess put this bite into the acoustic that really helped it cut through in a perfect way.

Musician's Friend is blowing out MXL mics this week:
MXL V57M Large-Diaphragm Condenser Mic for $39
MXL V63M-BP Battery-Powered Condenser Mic for $49
See MF's MXL page for details.
When I called to make a phone order, the person quoted me the last printed catalog price (about 2x the amount). Had to point out the new pricing to her, so if you're interested, make sure you do so as well.

I have done the Royer Mod's to both my 2001 and my pair of 603's and am really impressed with the mics before and after the mod. They are great sounding mics for the money and after the mod I'll take them over an audio technica tube mic any day after doing a comparison test last week.

Re: MXL mic comments?
I am looking for cheap mics for home recording.
Mostly guitars, though sometimes drums, bass, keyboard, clarinet, etc.etc.
I am looking at the array of MXL's on sale for cheap prices, (mxl 990, V63M, V57, 2001, 1006, or the 603S) and am somewhat baffled as to what a good set of choices would be.
Anyone have any suggestions?
Thanks!

I like my 1006. But then, I like my C1000S, and even my Behringer B1, so YMMV. But I find the MXL and my SM58 the most useful.

Re: MXL mic comments?
i have two 1006 mics that i basically have to use as overhead drum mics. They are the only mics i have. (other than sm57 and beta 53). Since i don't know what im missing using SD like the 603s instead of my LD does anyone have any advice...placement eq compression on how to compensate for these? They don't seem to pick up the bottom end well.
thanks

Re: MXL mic comments?
I bought two of these last time MF was selling them for this price, and they're great. They're butt-ugly, and kinda crappy on vocals, but on distorted guitar they sound sweet. I've been mixing one of these with an AT 4033 for the best recorded guitar I've gotten.leigh wrote:Musician's Friend is blowing out MXL mics this week:

Haven't tried them on drums yet, but I want to.
